If you get five good highers, what is normally the next step in 6th year?

Does anyone know if 6th year is normally sixth year studies? Or more highers?

when I was at school it was a bit of a mix but 6th year studies seemed to be kept for more able children especially. My child is currently choosing Nat 5 subjects so just thinking ahead

Another point - it’s worth remembering that university places for Scottish people are rationed - see recent news reports regarding entry to Scots law course at Edinburgh University. There isn’t any way round this for pupils who don’t live in the right postcodes as there is no mechanism to pay non Scottish resident fees for a place. Therefore to study certain courses - law, medicine, vet med etc it may be necessary to study in England or abroad , in which case Advanced Highers are likely to be required - and, of course , this will require more substantial parental financial support.
Politically very short sighted of course. These kids who will likely end up as higher rate tax payers (who are needed to add to the miserly 7-8 per cent only of Scottish higher rate tax payers at the moment) are likely to stay in England after their degrees …..

My dd currently doing 3 Advanced Highers. She already has unconditional offers for glasgow edinburgh & St. Andrews but is keeping her head down & hasn't yet succumbed to unconditionalitis.

She wanted to be 18 when starting uni so she could enjoy freshers

If they are planning on going to uni I'd recommend doing that.

Or leave school take a year out for working, travelling, volunteering or something else like that. Providing they've secured their uni place it a much better use of a year.

I don't see the point in doing more highers or advanced highers once an unconditional uni place is secure. But I hated secondary school and couldnt wait to get out of there.

My daughter is in fifth year and currently studying four nighters and one National 5. She is aiming for As and Bs. For sixth year she’s chosen to do one advanced higher, two highers (one is a crash) and a YASS OU course.

Edit: four Highers not “nighters” lol

DS2, the brainy one, did three AHs and NAT 5 Art it was hard work but good prep for uni.
DS3, the arty one, Did AH Art, Higher RMPS, photography and managed to be allowed double study slots ( he was meant to be doing his portfolio for art school). He could have gone to college but there wasn't a suitable course within easy travel and he also really needed an extra Higher so he stayed at school. He was a bit bored at times but needed the time to make after the COVID years stuck at home.
