Bonnyrigg

We’re currently looking at moving to Bonnyrigg. We only live about 20 mins away but haven’t long moved there from England so still unfamiliar with the area.

Driving through I thought it was ok but DH thought it looked rough.

Is anyone who lives local able to give me an opinion? Only looking at this area right now so while I appreciate suggestions of other places, this is the only one we’re considering at this moment in time! Thanks!

We lived in the new build estate in Bonnyrigg for a few years and now live in a different town in Midlothian. I wouldn’t describe it as rough. Like anywhere there are ‘rougher’ parts but it is generally a desirable place to live and is expanding quickly. Midlothian is great place to live.

I'd agree with pp. I lived nearby also but all these small towns have good and bead bits. I lived in Penicuik which is also sometimes called rough, but I lived in a lovely estate and never saw or had any bother.

Growing up Bonnyrigg did have a reputation of being rough and I'm sure it still can be in parts, but as with many other commutable towns it's well balanced now with many new builds. Midlothian has loads to offer, I'd be slightly mindful of high schools if I had current dc that age I think

This is all very helpful thank you!

@liveforsummer we have a child currently in P3, another due to start P1 in August and another who is only 1yo.

Could you elaborate a little more on the high schools? It’s a little way off but I think will come around very quickly! Thank you 😊

Midlothian tends to have High School campuses that also house the library and leisure facilities. This can mean most kids are bussed in.

A lot of the new build estates also have no local shops. Fine now petrol prices have come down but not great in the winter when you just need a pint of milk. As PP there are a LOT of new houses without necessarily the local infrastructure to support them.

Also check the local bus routes.

Have you looked in the Shawfair area?

Hi, we moved to Bonnyrigg 3 years ago and really like it. Everything you need is in the town and people seem lovely.
