Moving to EK

Hi all,

We're currently southside and we need to move house. It's far from an ideal situation with interest rates etc. but decision has been made.

We're looking in to part exchanging at the new Jakton development, or out by newlandsmuir. Really our only big need is to be close to a feeder school for the good secondaries.

Any advice on areas to avoid or where to look would be appreciated. We'd prefer Busby or Eaglesham but we need to part exchange and there aren't any new builds there.

Hello I think you would need to look into catchment schools for both of those areas.

Both areas are a bit out of the way so I would say car / driving would be essential. I'm not sure on the bus links?

The secondary schools in ek are all pretty similar. I know of kids at all three who are doing well and I'm not aware of any specific problems.

The stats for exam passes can be found online but I don't think they really tell you much.

The other new estate that a colleague looked at was up at Newton Mearns. Not sure if that's all full now but has the same issues with being out of the way.

Happy to answer any specific questions if I can. Good luck in your search!

Busby and Eaglesham are both East Ren, so totally different catchments. Busby has good connections to Glasgow City Centre ( trsin and bus 6 and 4A), not sure about Eaglesham though. No new builds in the area, though.

Unfortunately if you want your DC to get into Williamwood or other East Ren secondaries, getting a house in EK would get you out of the catchment so no guarantee for a place.

You have no chance of getting your child into Williamwood, Mearns Castle, St Ninians etc on a placement request at P1 or s1 if you live in South Lanarkshire. If there are any places for out of catchment kids they go to siblings or other East Ren kids.

All the Ek high schools are ok but not great. Calderglen and St Andrews and St Brides are supposed to be better than Duncanrig.

Check the catchment areas here.

Ignore anything on Rightmove , it only tells you nearby schools.

Would any of the new build estates at the back of Mearns work?

Indeed OP, if your biggest need is the East Ren secondaries as you say, EK won't get you there ( unless you are VERY lucky). My DC has a couple of classmates who live outside the catchment but I think they had siblings already at the school when they started. Try to get a house in the catchment if you can, the houses in Busby, Eaglesham and Waterfoot are more affordable than, say, in Clarkston or Giffnock.
