Secondary teachers strike

tocahairchop · 11/11/2022 11:10

Any other secondary teachers in Scotland who are not keen on strike action? I get the motives behind it but not at all up for striking at this point due to disruption and the fact that times are tough for everyone. Feel like I have to justify myself to non teachers by saying 'I don't agree with striking' as it's not going to be met favourably by the public in the same way as other sectors striking over pay.

That will interrupt DD’s prelims. Is it Wed and Thurs (as BBC says), or just Thurs?

Lidlfix · 29/11/2022 22:01

Depends where you live split over 2 days by an LA basis. So your DD's school will only be impacted on one day.

TinyChancer · 29/11/2022 22:41

Which schools / LAs are impacted next week? DD has her prelims too.

Whitestick · 29/11/2022 23:08

SSTA info here - ssta.org.uk/ssta-two-strike-days-announced/
that will show you which day it is in your authority. No way to tell how much individual schools will be effected.
The councils could decide to close, who knows?

gawditswindy · 30/11/2022 14:26

Only about 5% off the staff in my school are SSTA so school will be open here. Not sure how they plan to cover SSTA staff's classes mind you.

Lidlfix · 30/11/2022 15:25

We are 50/50 so looks likely we will not open to pupils. Waiting for confirmation though. My LA dragged its feet last week so don't expect anything different this time.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 30/11/2022 16:52

@Lidlfix are you an English teacher? I'm trying to find out what the word "glossing" means in the Nat 5 English marking schemes!

Lidlfix · 30/11/2022 17:01

I am. Glossing is SQA speak for attempting to show understanding by expressing a word, phrase or summarised point in the candidate's own words. Paraphrasing if that makes more sense. A gloss doesn't just mean changing tense or suffix it has to show adequate understanding of meaning as it maybe context driven.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 30/11/2022 18:44

Thank you so much @Lidlfix . So if (just making this up) text said "he quivered with excitement" and teen puts something like "he was shaking with anticipation" that would be glossing?
I feel very old sometimes Blush

FuckingHateRats · 30/11/2022 21:25

Pretty much exactly like you've said, as long as anticipation is a context-appropriate 'swap' for 'excitement'. As long as you have retained the core concept or idea, it doesn't have to be a like for like sentence either. Sometimes it takes longer to paraphrase than the writer did, and that's fine too. They'll look for the idea over the entirely of the answer.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 30/11/2022 23:33

Thank you Rats.
I wish I could sit it for her Blush

tocahairchop · 01/12/2022 19:33

Looks like schools in my authority are managing to stay open next week during the ssta strike

Still waiting to hear about my LA schools... wish they would hurry up with a decision.

Lidlfix · 01/12/2022 21:01

We are varied from school to school. Some open (only 2 SSTA/NASUWT members) others open only to S5/6 .

TinyChancer · 02/12/2022 13:17

Haven't heard anything from DDs school if they are closing although its notable that the day of the strike is the only day she doesn't have a prelim exam.

theferry · 02/12/2022 16:27

DD has her maths n5 prelim on the 8th. Local press is reporting that schools will be open only for S5 and S6. Nothing from the council, though. DDs really hoping they close!

BlueThursday · 02/12/2022 18:08

East Dunbartonshire announced today all high schools and a few primaries will be closed on the 7th

have any further talks taken place?

Whitestick · 02/12/2022 18:22

Talks as in a further offer? No

I’m not a teacher and while I appreciate the stance teachers are taking I feel striking will affect those (usually women) who are even worse paid who will now have to take time off work themselves.

public sympathy may only stretch so far

Will many take time off to look after secondary age children? OK there will be some with additional needs that can't be left unsupervised, but most will just spend a day -on the Xbox- revising

They'd better not as I'll be putting their work online for them!

Michellexxx · 02/12/2022 19:27

I am a bit confused about the schools staying open for only S5/6. How will that work with teachers? Obviously eis have advised that classes for strike teachers shouldn’t be covered. But not sure how that works if they’ve opened outwith timetable.
I am actually not leaving work for kids either- the point of the strike is to not teach. Prepping like that is basically doing work for that day..

gawditswindy · 02/12/2022 20:24

I'm interested in that myself. Unless someone strike- breaks, there will potentially be a class of kids turning up to a room, with no teacher and no work. SMT have guaranteed to us that no teacher will be asked to cover a striking member's class so I'm intrigued.

And we're open to all, other than those on study leave.

Whitestick · 02/12/2022 22:32

If it's just S5/6, I assume they'd leave them alone.
Don't see how it would work with the whole school! Unless only a tiny number are striking, the HT will have a rough idea how many.
You absolutely do not leave work if you are on strike!!
