Growing fruit and veg - newbie

Hi I'm a completely newbie but I would like to try and grow some fruit and veg.

We live in Scotland where the weather is not great so maybe start off with doing something easy indoors?

Any tips or suggestions or recommendations for kits please?

Probably best to take it to the gardener’s world section, but - I’d recommend seeds from real-seeds.co.uk who ONLY sell stuff which tolerates their west wales coastal environment which means they stand a good chance here. Pointless buying from France (as many imports are) because French weather is so very different from ours.

our seasons are short but plenty of light - the wind is a killer though so if you can tuck a wee polytunnel somewhere that’ll do it.

Raspberries, strawberries & Rhubarb do well in Scotland. Read up on when best to plant them, probably spring. We also have success with blackcurrants, redcurrants blackberries and plums.
Peas, runner beans, courgettes and mangetout are easy for a beginner and will grow in Scotland. Just be sure to plant seeds early or buy plants early in the season as we have a very short growing season in Scotland. Onions & garlic would also do fine. You need to water them religiously in summer and also feed them regularly.
Just have a go and learn from your mistakes, that’s part of the fun and you’ll be a better gardener for it😊

Where in Scotland ?

Find what is grown on local allotments ?

Remember that although temperature is cooler the daylight hours in summer are very long so you end up with a compressed growing season

We have beans potatoes turnips Detroit chard rhubarb strawberries and squash in our first year

You could sow broad beans and plant garlic outside now for spring... very easy. Indoors you could buy seeds and wait for early spring... chillis and peppers are first. Charles Dowding's books and his calendar are great, he does 'no dig' which requires a fair bit of compost or manure to start with, but even if you don't follow his methods (see him on YouTube for explanations) the sowing dates on his calendar are great.

And he does give advice on how to adjust sowing times for Scotland too.
