Just that really - will the Scottish 46% rate automatically be abolished or does Nicola Sturgeon have control over that?

It's not going to change. It's not good news for nationalism as I imagine a lot of supertaxed folk will leave. A real difference of 6% ? That's massive.

SylviasMotherSaid · 23/09/2022 11:14

People honestly can’t say that the higher tax rate in Scotland has improved big stuff like the NHS either .

Fandangoes · 23/09/2022 11:37

I wonder how long NS will take to announce her plans

Does Scottish Gov not believe in higher taxation to fund higher public spending? So less money in your pocket but more things provided by the state?

If so then I can't see anything changing here

BinBandit · 23/09/2022 13:27

According to the news, there is to be no change in Scotland but Holyrood will be given the money to either match the tax cut or spend as they wish,

LizzieMacQueen · 23/09/2022 13:48

I know i could google but the tax raising powers ScotGov have, are these absolute powers rather than just varying powers - as in, they are only allowed to vary the rates by ( say ) 1 %.

ScotsLassie322 · 23/09/2022 14:03

The mind boggles re what the Tories have done

Millionaires paying the same rate as those on 50k.

Bankers can earn unlimited bonuses

Big business owners payrss corporation tax

I mean I knew they were the larty for the rich but really, this is taking a p big time.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 23/09/2022 14:08

They are meant to only be allowed ‘marginal’ variation- this is way beyond that now.

herewego9 · 23/09/2022 15:40

Tricky one for SNP. My England-based colleague already pays £1.5k less tax than me on the same salary - his public services don't seem much different either.

Scottishskifun · 23/09/2022 16:31

It's not just the higher rate not being passed on which won't mean much to majority of Scots but the 19p is unlikely to be passed on either given that 25k and over pay 21% tax already and the 41% threshold is 7k less then the English.

We will all get a lecture how we should do out bit instead and it won't be the SNPs fault that's the reality whilst the gap widens.

Cismyfatarse · 23/09/2022 16:55

I am very grumpy about this. Teacher. Not on a huge salary. We just seem to be ignored as if earning 40-50k makes us rich.

Novichok2022 · 23/09/2022 19:25

The problem is the majority of Scottish population are not higher tax payers.
the snp will support people who vote for them. Maybe time to move south? Move a hour south and save a lot. The services are not better in Scotland from my personal experience.

According to my accountant I will be paying £3k Pa more than if I lived in England
And same for DH
I wouldn’t mind if it was being spent well, but education, health all a shit show

I think this is the crux of it!
If you dare complain you get alright for the rich etc etc but reality is the threshold differences hit normal workers not just bankers as everyone presumes.

I am in no doubt we will receive a lecture about our social responsibility when reality is we have the worst life expectancy, worst drug deaths, education system in disarray (not teachers fault BTW!) and millions spent on sodding court cases!!!!

interesting read in other words we will be paying more tax with nothing to show for it. No better services but will be worse off than if the Scottish government had kept the Barnet formula.

BinBandit · 23/09/2022 20:32

I don't have an issue with paying more tax, It was 30% when I started work, but only if it's transparent where it is going and it's going on improving opportunities for those who need it. And we know that isn't going to happen.

At the end of the day, it's more valuable to the economy to have the people at the bottom with extra money as they will mainly contribute by spending pretty much anything extra on goods and services rather than trying to squirrel it away in tax efficient investments. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I think getting everyone to have a decent standard of living in real time comes first.

I think they would have been better lifting thresholds both for tax and NI as this helps the lower level incomes more but is a benefit to everyone. But I'm not an economist

Novichok2022 · 23/09/2022 20:33

If they don’t even the rates even a little a lot of people who can ( including myself) may leave then they are going to have even less tax revenue as per the pie chart!

ScotsLassie322 · 23/09/2022 20:45

Yes, so £20/ £30 a month difference for those on a teacher's salary. Yet there was one on here saying she was thinking of leaving the country over it.

Novichok2022 · 23/09/2022 20:47

Not necessarily the teachers leaving but higher tax payers maybe. Not to even mention lbtt difference and cost to move !

Cismyfatarse · 23/09/2022 21:16

They really are out to crush us. DH (semi retired) has no pension of any with but his Dad left a property which we rent out to tourists. That is being made incredibly difficult with new licensing rules and ridiculous paperwork.

I am a teacher and being taxed to death. My colleagues are furious, and young enough to move. Who can blame them?

Both my (Scottish) kids will graduate and settle in England. They (as Unionists and Labour voters) are not welcome here. If you don't glorify the great Nicola, or dare to question her, you are not allowed to speak up.

Leaving has never felt so appealing.

ScotsLassie322 · 23/09/2022 21:16

Are you saying that you want the government here to reduce the contributions of the rich also?

The pound was falling through the floor today. The Tories who shorted it will be making a fortune.

CasaDelSoot · 23/09/2022 21:27

I don't mind paying a bit more tax if we have decent public services which benefit everyone.
But despite free prescriptions, free personal care, eye tests etc so everyone can get the care and medication they need irrespective of ability to pay we still have the lowest life expectancy in uk!
The money is clearly not being targeted properly

I expect some parity especially at lower levels and not for people to be utilised because the Scottish govt can't count and took the warnings that they had their maths wrong on taxable income before gaining powers as "scaremongering".

So now Scotland has a billions of pounds deficit because they over cooked the numbers!

Rich? I have been teaching 31 years, 25 of them in Scotland. I am not rich. But I am paying just over £100 more a month than I would in England where I would also have a higher teaching wage and be able to buy a smaller property when I retire without needing 20k for Land and Buildings Tax.

I used to have a season ticket for prescriptions so it cost about £100 a year. Cheap / free bus travel is not much use when they are cancelling the bus route near me.

I can't get a GP's appointment without being near death and DH has cardiac problems and still has not seen an actual doctor - but just had monitors attached and then silence.

Dundee us full of rubbish, pot holes and falling down buildings with closed shops in them. There are drugs addicts dying.

But, hey! It is all fucking rosy up here because St Nicola cares so much.

Oh, but plenty of cash for a referendum. Cash for unnecessary trips to Denmark and to fight people trying to protect the definition of woman in law. Plenty of MY money from taxes to spend on these things. On transing children and stupid bloody ideology.
