Someone Scottish said to me they are always a pint shy.

What does that mean?

That they need drink to be confident?

Any clues???

I'm from Edinburgh and shy means short. For example you might be 50p shy of your busfare.
Not heard it used as being a pint shy though.

Person is from Glasgow.

Pint short? Pint short of what?

Are you sure they didn't say they are always a point shy? It means they are are always struggling a bit

Concur with the 'shy' referring to being short of something in a lacking sense, so I'd interpret it as them saying that they always find themselves being short of enough cash to fund their needs, or that their life always seems to transpire in such a ways that it falls just short of what they'd hoped for.

It's a low-level, self-deprecating 'woe is me' regardless.

What you said really, a pint short of whatever they are aiming for - normally confidence or just forgetting their worries. they can't quite get where they want to be.

Oh, I've heard people say a pint shy, or a drink shy if they're not drinking pints.

Like if your friend said "Go and chat up that guy at the bar", you might say "Oh, I'm two vodkas shy of that happening. kind of thing.

What was the context? How did the conversation go?

It was someone saying they used to drink heavy when going out as they were always a pint shy.

I didn't like to ask at the time but after I thought, what's that all about?

I think he meant he was short of confidence so needed a drink

I would think it's a pint shy of a good time so they were a bit miserable/sad. Couldn't enjoy themselves.
