Commutable into Edinburgh

DS starting new job in Edinburgh mid October and looking for best places to rent commutable into the city.

He doesn't drive so would be tram or bus max 30 mins each way. His budget for rent is max 900 but ideally slightly less and he's looking for a studio/one bed as has a dog!

Would love some recommendations for areas outside of city centre that's a 30 min commute or less.

Thank you 🙏 ConfusedWink

30 minutes keeps you well within the bypass - tram to the airport from Princes Street is just over 30minutes and on the bus heading into the city at rush hour you'd be looking at a longer journey from some of the outskirts.
The small tenement flats round Gorgie and Polwarth should be within his budget and are still quite central. Also Easter Road area, Meadowbank and Fountainbridge. His biggest problem might be finding somewhere that allows a dog!

It really depends on where in Edinburgh he is working. City centre? West End or East end? The Gyle/Edinburgh park?

also check out the bus route map www.lothianbuses.com for access to where he's going to be working

Polworth, Merchiston, Slateford all fit the bill.

Half an hour to where? It can be half an hour across the centre so it really depends when his work is.

how about train? 30 minutes from Edinburgh would give you options in West Lothian, such as Livingston, Linlithgow (nice but pricey) Bathgate etc
and probably also Fife as well going the other way

Don’t under estimate cost of the trains though! You’d be looking at around £200 a month from those places listed above is you’re commuting 5 days a week at peak times. Whereas the bus anywhere within Edinburgh £1.80 each way and that’s cheaper if you buy a weekly or monthly pass.

Falkirk. Around Falkirk High train station. It's on the E2G mainline. Frequent trains running. Gets you in to Edinburgh in around 30 minutes.

On the other hand, renting in Edinburgh is extortionate 🤷

it is @User48751490 but personally I’d rather spend it on living closer to the city than being crammed into a scotrail cattle truck for a few hours a week! Each to their own though.

Gorgie, Dalry and Haymarket may be worth a look.
