Hillwalking in Scotland recommendations

Hello.

I'm looking for somewhere to stay (self catering dog friendly cottage, the more wild and remote the better) which would be a good centre for walking right from the door.

I'm an experienced hill walker but shockingly have done very little in Scotland, and want to start to explore. I am not into Munro bagging, but am used to comfortably covering ten to fifteen miles a day. ( admittedly this is mainly in the cheviots and north Pennines, and realise depending on location we are talking a whole different scale!)

Any thoughts?

North west, applecross or torridon are great for walking plus the coast is spectacular. Tbh anywhere on the north west.

www.walkhighlands.co.uk Is a great site

West coast is stunning and quite different to cheviots and Pennines - steeper and rougher - torridon can be difficult - sharp ridges and quartzite

Glencoe might be a easier transition - glen shiel also

Cairngorms is great for long tramps - very different feel again

Generally speaking you are much more likely to find a path to follow on the munros than on smaller hills

Far north west is pretty awesome - assynt - must be seen once in your life

Thanks so much! I have actually been to Applecross a few times, many years ago. Loved it, but heard is now rather busy?

Will look at that website, thank you!

My mother in law has one in cheviots, has Wi-Fi and is clean but old fashioned. Don't think I can put here but can pm me for link. Very rural.

The north coast 500 has greatly increased the number of visitors and cars/vans , and the facilities haven't scaled to meet demand. I'd skip applecross these days

That's sad to hear about Applecroos, only . It used to be a place of utter enchantment.

Anyway lots of other options to explore!

Eastern Cairngorms - Braemar, Ballater, Tomintoul area. Plenty of scope for long walks. You might have to look a bit further afield for accommodation though, the main towns tend to be tourist honeypots.

I love the Cairngorms, but also stayed near north ballachuish which I could walk from
