West End, worth it?

Hello!

We are a young, originally European family who would love to live more urbanly in a flat in the West End of Glasgow (we are currently living in 'convenient' and boring East Renfrewshire, close to schools and with a good-size garden) but who are put off by certain things like:

  • Tenements' stairs because of having two young children (in our home country, all flats have modern lifts).
  • Parking spaces (again, most flats in our home country have their own allocated garage space underground)
  • Tenement noises both from the street traffic and neighbours upstairs/downstairs.
  • Schools, supposedly not being nearly as good as East Renf/East Dunb ones.

Can you please convince us that these are not major issues on a daily basis, so we can finally move and stop getting there by car every single Saturday as we absolutely love it?

Thanks!

Hmmm most of my family live in flats there. Two in particular are stunning, massive and cost much kore than my detached 4 bed with two drives but I honestly couldn't cope with the parking, the shared gardens etc. not to mention having to watch noise with people above and below you.

This for me too, sorry. Also: shared stairwells, door entry systems, and factors.

My friend lives in the west end in a town house that cost £1.5m, yet cannot get parked anywhere near it. It's an absolute pain in the ass when bringing in shopping or a child sleeping in a car seat.

I think she's off her head.

I just don't understand it. Why massively inconvenience your life on a daily basis to avoid a car journey at the weekend.

If you're prepared to go for something more modern, rather than a tenement, there are flats with parking in the west end. We live in one and are expecting our first baby in the summer. Lots of families nearby. Ultimately we will probably make the East Ren/Dunbartonshire move one day because it's only a two bed and if we have more children we'll eventually outgrow it. But not in any hurry to move and so glad to be getting to spend mat leave here rather than the suburbs! I do have a hankering for a garden though... Not sure in your shoes what I'd do. Love the west end but the grass isn't always greener!

These are major issues and a choice I wouldn't make personally.

IME, one baby it's fine and tolerable, more than one and tenement living is really hard going. We had a gorgeous flat in Dennistoun, swore blind we'd make do because we loved it there, but the exact same things got to us.

Our 3 bed in higher knightswood is about to go on the market. Much cheaper than the west end with a huge garden, driveway parking for 2 cars and 5mins from anniesland cross and near westerton Station. Gutted to leave but we are relocating x
