will move to Hillfoots end of June, and struggle should we go for carpet or laminate floor. because of limited budget probably will diy by DS and I, definitely first time. considering the cold weather in Scot, should we go for carpet? but difficult to upkeep and maintain, whilst laminate more hassle free but would it be very cold in winter time? Pls share your thoughts and vote to help us decide ☺️

laminate downstairs, carpet on the stairs and upstairs. Then you can easily clean your heavy use areas.

Depending on your layout you could put carpet in the lounge as well. But laminate with nice rugs would be nice.

Third option. Carpet tiles. We have some in our heavy traffic area and i was a bit snotty about it at first but they look ok, cheap, easy to DIY too. Easier to clean when the dog has vomited.

insulate underfloor and look at windows/doors/attic insulation as much as floor covering.

I'm in Ireland so slightly different weather but we just took up carpets which were in bedrooms, hallway and sittingroom plus an industrial carpet type floor covering that was in the dining room (it was similar to carpet tiles but one piece and still looked good after almost 30 years), I couldn't wait to get rid of the carpets, the house looks brighter, cleaner, bigger, its easier to clean, a quick vacuum and mop and it's perfect, we live rurally with lots of dogs, dog hair, muck etc. I'll buy some rugs for the bedrooms and sittingroom because dh misses the carpets but if it was just me I wouldn't bother, I absolutely love the appearance of the bright flooring without interruption. Can you tell I'm delighted with it??

Laminate is incredibly cold underfoot so if you want ease of cleaning why not consider a vinyl or linoleum floor as a third option? I put a lovely bio vinyl in my living room two years ago, prices were quite similar to laminate and the optics aren't much different.

Scotland too - I've laminate downstairs in high traffic rooms and carpet upstairs and in separate living room. I use slippers and rugs. My kids are small though so it would be filthy if we didn't have laminate! We DIYd and insulated underneath.

Rugs can be much cheaper than carpet and be warm underfoot

@graceandmercy

Pretty certain it was carpetmaster in Stirling. I cannot remember if they had many colour options. We have dark grey and I think it looks fine.

J and W carpets in Dunfermline are excellent but I don't know about the other branches.

I'm about 30 miles away and have laminate throughout ground floor, with rug in lounge. It's warm enough but we do wear slippers.

Well carpet is much quicker easier to clean, you have to hoover/sweep then mop a hard floor. Whereas carpet you just hoover. But I think wood flooring is much more hygenic. If it's a new house I wouldn't worry to much about it being cold, I think you do need a rug tho personally.
