Young persons bus pass

I'm trying to fill out the online submission for my child to get free bus travel - it's one of the most excruciating processes ever!

Did anyone apply at the library? If so, what do I need to take please?

Thanks!

I did ours online. It was a bit of a faff but worked out ok

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/05/2022 16:26

I have tried a couple of times with one child aged over 12 and given up.
The process for under 12s looks even worse and I haven't even bothered trying that one.

Whole thing is a total shambles.

TeeNoG · 10/05/2022 18:21

Thanks @dementedpixie, glad you got it to work!

@MajorCarolDanvers I agree - for some reason I just can't upload any of the information they are requesting. I'll try on another device tomorrow 😕

I did two at once, online, one came through and the other said I hadn't uploaded a birth certificate (I certainly thought I had). Have heard people say it was quicker at the library but I'm never off when it's open.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 11/05/2022 06:39

It was so painful when we did ours. If you search back there's a long thread about it - a few people went down the library experience and shared info about that. It certainly seemed more straightforward.

oyatra · 11/05/2022 06:44

Yes I'd read the online process was a nightmare so popped along to my local library with the relevant paperwork. Took 10 minutes, got it in the post a few days later.

oyatra · 11/05/2022 06:49

Birth certificate, proof of address (I used a letter from the NHS re covid vaccs), a passport photo and current or expired passport.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/05/2022 08:39

It's easier to get a passport than a Scottish bus pass.

museumum · 11/05/2022 08:42

I think it’s easier for under 12s. I didn’t have any problems doing it in my phone. I did already have a mygov login though (from parentpal) maybe that’s the tricky bit? If so maybe get that first?

rookiemere · 11/05/2022 08:42

It's an absolute pain and if your DS loses it then - as he is under 16 - you have to go through the tortuous process again. Worth its weight in gold though.

Itawapuddytat · 11/05/2022 18:57

Got DD the bus pass, she's under 12 so it was pretty easy. DS is 14, he has his young Scot card, the one he got a couple of years ago. Do you know whether he needs a new one to use as a bus pass, or would his current one work? Thanks!

Parrish · 11/05/2022 19:01

If your child is over 16 they have to do it themselves in person.

if your over 16 child has an existing Young Scot card then download the app from Transport Scotland and get the travel entitlement added to your existing card using that.

Under 16, you need a new one.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2022 19:49

My dd did hers online (she's 18). She got a new card as her old one was from when she was in P7 and didn't look like her any more

BumblelionBum · 11/05/2022 19:57

The online process wouldn’t accept my DD’s birth certificate. You should be able to find an email address for your council on the website. I emailed, got a personal response and got the card the next day. Saves a trip to the library.

Itawapuddytat · 11/05/2022 20:30

Thank you!

TeeNoG · 17/05/2022 15:37

Thanks all for your help! My child is 7, so it seems I am at an advantage! Great advice from everyone - I'll gather up what I need and get to the library Grin

What did you say in the email to get your DD's card next day? The online process is a complete nightmare. My daughter turns 12 next week

How long after did you get the bus card?

ThatsRoughBuddy · 18/05/2022 01:46

I used the library for my youngest son and it took exactly 1 week to get the card in the post.

Awayyego · 18/05/2022 02:57

No idea how to link but this method took 30 seconds if you have a Young Scot card.

I just did DS's last week, he already had the YS card, but it was snapped 🙄 and needed replacing to add the travel part. I did his online, and it was a bit of a faff (trying to get photos to be accepted) but got there in the end His card came through a couple of days later. The biggest faff was making sure the photos were small enough to be accepted, I had to crop them.

graceandmercy · 18/05/2022 20:16

hiya, my DS is 16 and we will soon move to Scotland. I called council and replied me that DS's name will not appear in council tax bill, and school application is still in progress, so how can I get an address proof for him? thx all.

Badlifeday · 18/05/2022 22:01

It would be unusual to be able to get a Scottish bus pass while not living in Scotland, I don't think there's much alternative but to wait till he's enrolled in the school - maybe others will know better
