Stirling primary schools - Cambusbarron/St Ninians

Does anyone have experience of either? We're looking at a house where we could probably go to either (on the edge of catchment so one would be a placing request).

Does anyone have opinions, good or bad, about either school?

Also trying to figure out logistics of nursery and school runs and wondering what parking is like at each of these schools?

My DCs went there but long time ago before the new build. Friends with children there tell me they're happy with it - good teachers and lots of activities. St Ninians is where the Daily Mile started and I think they still do it - sometimes past our house which is lovely to see.

Friends with Cambusbarron kids complain about the classes being full and the number of new houses being built (although I think the Seven Sisters development will probable be allocated to St Ninians). It does have the forest classroom which looks fantastic and I'd think it would be nice going to a school surrounded by woods and countryside rather than busy traffic.

Parking is impossible for both. St Ninians is on a busy road (although could park in the Lidl car park). Closest parking for Cambusbarron would be at community centre and a 5 minute walk.

I’ve got 1 who went to st ninians
3 to Cambusbarron

Cambusbarron is a lovely village, very friendly and the school is really nice. Lots of houses being built but no plans to extend the school yet. If you live in the village you wouldn’t really need to park but there’s plenty places - it’s up hill though, so you have to park and walk. The woods and forest classroom is lovely and the kids are outside a lot. I’d choose cps if I could go back and choose again.

st nininas is big and I felt is a bit impersonal my son loved it and is still friends with lads he started with there. He was also of the daily mile mrs wylie era too @Cazziebo wonder if our kids know each other 😊

Woodside court and yetts also parking for cps. Many parents park at back of high school for st ninians - I see them in when waiting for my older lad at shs beechwood is lovely I take the dog and younger 2 whilst waiting for him

@serenghetti2011 Mrs Wyllie was DD2s teacher for P6 or P7- brilliant teacher. We moved from a village school to Torbrex so it was a bit of a culture shock going to Weaver Row! Can't fault it - it does have a very mixed catchment but I think that's good.

I do wonder about the new build - they have these big windows facing the busy road with the sun beaming in most of the school day. The blinds are usually closed when I pass. If that was a workplace I'd find it pretty depressing?

serenghetti2011 · 24/04/2022 21:38

I thought that too, my son had mr brown in p6 he really liked him and mr Cassidy p7 was a nice school but I can imagine coming from a little village it was quite daunting. I thought that too re the windows, must be dark a lot. It’s a nice area though torbex and Cambusbarron op I think both are good choices

Cazziebo · 24/04/2022 22:18

DD2 loved Mr Cassidy - think he took the football team?

serenghetti2011 · 25/04/2022 12:13

I think he did, he was a fab p7 teacher my son still talks about him. Not sure if he’s still there

Seven Sisters development will go to Cambusbarron Primary

There has been plans to extend since the Seven Sisters development got planning. Barratt are required to pay £5 million towards a double stream extension at Cambusbarron

Thanks, all! We didn't get the house in the end but I appreciate the insight in case another one comes up in the area!

Sorry to jump in, but can anyone help me about St Ninians? I've read the most recent report in the school (2018 I think) which looks pretty good to me, but DH has been told the school is rough and not a good choice. And the area around it is rough.

I'm more open minded... but should we have concerns about the school?

Cazziebo · 08/05/2022 12:36

Hi @ThorsBedazzler It's mixed rather than rough in terms of catchment. My DCs are older now but as I said above, friends are happy with it.

serenghetti2011 · 08/05/2022 13:48

The school isn’t rough, as trees said it’s a very mixed catchment but a nice school and a good central area. Cambusbarron is an option if you’re not sure about st ninians

ThorsBedazzler · 09/05/2022 09:26

Thanks for replying!

Like I said, I'm much more open minded than DH, I think he's just worried about change more than anything. His friend's mum used to teach there a while ago and he claims that she claimed it wasn't a good school but that doesn't match in with what I've read here, the last report (is it care commission?) And what you've both said.

It's given me more hope, let's put it that way!
