Supply teaching - Scotland

Hi

Are there any supply teachers on here? I'm thinking of leaving my permanent job in order to do supply in another council and have a few questions. My main issue is, will I be able to do enough days?
Thanks

I think if you are prepared to teach the worst classes uoull be fine

Superjaggy · 06/04/2022 17:38

You are likely to get snapped up as soon as you are on the list and the first school that books you will want to hold on to you very, very tightly! Won't necessarily be for a tricky class, just for a teacher who has Covid/ long term absence. Then they'll come back and another teacher in the same school will have it... and so on. Good luck and enjoy!

Our school, In Edinburgh haven't had much luck with getting supply as they have all been snapped up as absence levels are high.

EYP supply send out lots of jobs too yet barely any staff available either.

You'll be fine, the challenge will be not ending up in a long term full time role! Schools tend to hold on to supply teachers when they can get them. All the west of Glasgow councils are desperate for supply.

Thanks all, lots of helpful comments. I'll decide over the next couple of weeks whether to leave and start supply over the summer.

IIRC I think I've heard that supply teachers only get paid for the hours they're teaching, so no break or lunch times. Just something to check out as it takes pay down quite a bit.

Mistressiggi · 07/04/2022 17:46

Permanent teachers don't get paid for break or lunchtimes either

Outlander2022 · 07/04/2022 18:51

I have a friend who does some supply on top of her three perm days and I think she said she makes £100 a day, which isn't bad. I really need to clear at least £1000 a month.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think some authorities still have a different rate of pay for short term vs fixed term.

It might also take you a while to get your foot in the door and to find a school you like.

With the changes to NCCT coming up, there are (or should be!) going to be a lot more jobs available.

Mistressiggi · 08/04/2022 09:14

I think this is a risky move if you have a permanent post just now. Certainly you need to speak to several supply teachers to find out more info, or a school business manager might also be able to help.

It's the sick pay that would worry me. If you break your leg youll have no wage.

There's a thread about supply teaching on the Facebook Scottish Primary Teachers page atm with lots of people sharing info about short term and long term rates etc.

Haudyourwheesht · 10/04/2022 20:28

Is it primary or secondary? Good supply teachers are like hen's teeth in Glasgow so you'll be inundated if you're around here.

Thanks everyone.

I am a primary teacher. I'll join the Facebook group for some more information.
