Between school and uni (Scotland)

I remember when I left school in 1985 I was able to claim "the brew" for the few weeks between school and starting college. Think it was around £30ish a week and I gave my parents £15 a week digs.

ds(18) will be leaving school, I assume, after his exams and will be starting uni in August.

He hasn't got a PT job yet, allegedly concentrating on revision. He is planning to try to get one asap after exams are finished and over the summer to save some money for uni.

If he doesn't pick up anything is there anything available to claim for the period in-between? I can't find anything on-line.

If you are eligible, then just child benefit i'm afraid.

Don't think so if they start in August. Even 25 years ago we couldn't claim unemployment until the 2nd September because child benefit is payable until then, if you are on universal credit that is payable until the 2nd September too

Thought as much. I can't remember exactly as it was so long ago, but I do remember standing in the queue and signing on, it might have been because it was a last minute decision to apply and I didn't have a place at college until a week or so before the course started.

When do they usually leave school in S6? His last exam is mid May, but leavers prom is not until mid June.

Our high school the last ‘official’ day of S6 is the last day before study leave. Then they just go in and sit exams - no need to go into school after that and then the celebration prom.

Your DC could line up a job for after his last exam unless they have plans to take a break/holiday.

Yes, he can claim universal credit because he will not officially be a student in the time between school and uni, my daughter did this between college and uni.

He will not be able to claim any benefits during the summers of his degree.

He will be expected to meet worksearch requirements even though he has a place at uni, I think he will have to have meetings and either work or search for work for 35 hours a week.

Depending whereabouts in the country you are OP, there are loads of jobs in hospitality.
They're crying out for summer staff in the areas that attract tourists

No he won't be entitled to anything you might get his child benefit till September, I did when mine left school but they are 24 so might have all changed

Im also of that age where I could sign on between school and college and during the holidays

My DC1 left school last year and we got child benefit until august (4 months after 18th birthday)
