Underage sex

How do people feel about the Scottish Government's guidance to police, teachers etc on not telling parents if their 13 to 16 year old is having (illegal) sex?

I feel that the Scottish Govt should spend more time sorting out A and E waiting times, the backlog of surgery waiting lists and cancelled medical tests and less time asking teenagers to fill out questionnaires about their sexual activities, but maybe that's just me!
Priorities and all that.

I don't think parents should be informed of 2 13-16 year olds having sex. It could potentially be very dangerous for the teens at home. At least if a trusted adult knows they can support them with their sexual health.

I love the assumption there that parents are not trustworthy

"Instead, the policy says that if a young person is in a "safe and mutually respectful" relationship, their "confidentiality" should be respected."

The big question is - who decides whether a 13 year old girl having sex is in a "safe and mutually respectful relationship", so that her parents shouldn't be told about it? Whose view of "safe and mutually respectful" is it? Do those people have the interests of the girl at heart? Do they have the time and the skill to explore the issue with her?

Some parents aren't. A 'well meaning' guidance counsellor at my school told my mother there was rumours I was having sex and I got the shit kicked out of me. It's not safe for everyone, if teens aren't telling their parents there is often a reason.
Swear · 22/02/2022 08:40

I can imagine what one of those reasons is - ever heard of grooming?

Sometimes there's a reason kids don't tell parents and sometimes there isn't a good one - tbh if they're under the age of consent, I can't see how this doesn't make a mockery of the age of consent. It's 16 for a reason.

I wonder how often the parents really are at fault - or are they just not ok with 13 year olds being sexually active?

Swear · 22/02/2022 12:38

The government is very very interested in the sexual activity of teenagers (in detail). And now this. I wonder who benefits from parents not knowing about their 13 year olds having sex. I wonder who will be in control of the views on underage sex held by social workers, teachers and the police?
