Possible move to Glasgow

Hello, I need a bit of advice on a possibility that has presented itself. We currently live with two children in the SE of England. My husband is originally from Glasgow but no family there anymore.
An opportunity has come up for us to move up and we tentatively want to explore whether we can consider this.

He'd be mostly working from home but possibly need to commute into Glasgow city centre every now and then so we need to consider transport links.

I'm a teacher and I know jobs in the central belt are rare so we'd be relying on just his wage for the mortgage. I think our budget would be around £150k which is obviously not big. We may be able to stretch a bit.
Things we would like:

  • ideally 3 bedrooms but I hear you all laugh so 2 is fine and they share
  • safe area for us all, especially for me and the children out and about
  • a small outdoor space
  • We are living in a flat now and hate it for a variety of reasons. Ideally I want to deal with as few neighbours as possible for repairs and stuff (currently dealing with an issue for 5 years as other people refuse to get it done) so a bit weary of a flat or terraced houses but it is what it is obviously.

I have had a look on Rightmove but with offers over and not knowing the outskirts well I'm not sure whether places I've looked at are realistic. Some houses are very cheap but then could be that the area isn't very nice?

I'm basically here for a reality check. Ideally we'd like to make this move as we are completely priced out of our area here and I'm genuinely worried how we will continue to afford things, and this job seems great. But I want to be realistic.

Thank you

Here's a place that's possibly within your budget, area is fine, and you're handy for the station:

Cottage flats in Kings Park would be in budget and a short train journey to the city centre (or bus).

Cambuslang (one linked above) is also good and would have good train links and close to the motorway.

East Kilbride would also have options in budget. Some areas are a bit shit for public transport into Glasgow but still way better than current commutes.

west dunbartonshire is a good option

If you want to do teaching, you need to have experience and knowledge of the scottish education system. You may have to retrain or do some kind of refresher. Independent schools might be an option.

Neilston is a good option. Lovely village feel to it but good transport links. Train line straight to Glasgow. Primary and secondary schools are good too.

If you are planning on teaching in Scotland you need to make sure you are GTCS registered you won't be able to apply for jobs until you have registration.

I have family in eaglesham which is a lovely little place always really friendly and welcoming. Although not sure re houses there family member lives in an ex council which was 100k (3 bed) a few years ago.
Good luck with the move, it’s good you know the area (Glasgow) before moving I wouldn’t live in the city but do visit.

Op I am renting and I have just been through all this in last couple of months except it's just me I'm even moving there from somewhere quite near you now! And you're right there's nothing there!

What kind of "feel" are you looking for city buzz? Urban? Villagey? All are possible.

In terms of the flat situation it sounds like garden flat or 4 in a block/cottage would suit which there are plenty of (cottage doesn't mean the same in England quite as it does in Scotland or certainly glasgow it really means a building that looks from the outside like semi detached houses but are actually 4 self contained flats)

With cottage if you're ground floor you may get garden access if upper cottage this is less likely though you may have some access.

The market is moving super fast at the moment and the money places are going for I am told (I looked into buying possibly) is WAY over the "offers over" amount so I am gonna say with your budget you actually probably need to be looking at more like "offers over £80k" not even kidding cos places are going for 20/30/40k more than the min advertised. So I've been told.

Huge demand at the moment due to certain major employers moving to glasgow from London, Manchester and some overseas places too. (I wonder if this is reason for your move?)

Happy to guide on areas I'm familiar with by pm if you prefer.
