Where to buy in Glasgow??

Hi everyone,

I could really do with some advice on where to buy in/around Glasgow. Bit of background - myself, DH and DS (18 months) are new to the area, moved for DH's job. Currently renting in Bearsden and DH works at the University campus on Switchback Rd. We have a second baby on the way and would love to buy before this baby arrives early summer. Ideally we're looking for a 3 bed with a garden (like everyone else!) with a budget of up to £350,000 (so I guess HRV of £300,000 max?!)

Ideally we would like to live within walking or cycling distance of husband's work so have been looking in Bearsden and Kelvindale however we've made a few offers on houses that have all gone to a closing date and we feel completely outpriced despite putting in offers at 10% + over the HRV. So we're starting to look further afield including Southside. Really important are good local schools, mum and toddler activities and generally a safe, family friendly area (not asking for too much then)!

What would be good options for the Southside? And would the commute for DH just be completely awful as would involve the Clyde Tunnel? Any ideas on other areas north of the river to consider?

We've heard good things about Clarkston and Giffnock. We've also seen some gorgeous houses in Ralston and Mosspark which are within budget but I'm not so sure about these areas and the schooling options?

All advice welcome, thanks so much!!
@Firefightress1 how do you find Knightswood? I’ve seen a few nice properties on Rightmove recently and one has come up just opposite the golf course (Loanfoot Ave) which is ticking lots of boxes but I’m finding it hard to find out about the area. Do you know much about the local primaries? Thanks very much Smile
We moved up here from Ayrshire and I absolutely love it! Close enough to glasgow and 5 mins from westerton train station. My hubbie commutes by bike to the city centre along the canal and it takes around 20 mins.i love walking and often go to Balloch and out to Bishopbriggs.
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions but I can honestly recommend it. Nearer to westerton seems to be a really nice area without bearsden prices x

What about anniesland?

Cherrybomb197 · 09/02/2022 22:11

@OliveRhino88
I’m from west Glasgow originally. All of the houses I’ve linked to you I would be happy to buy myself. And all are reasonably near the switchback

Partick, Kelvingrove, finneston, Queen’s Park are all nice :)

As pp said Houston & Bridge of Weir are lovely. Excellent schools. The high school has won all kinds of awards. Its further out but commuting doesn't take long

Theyre also nice and central. 25 mins in one direction gets you to Glasgow or in the other direction you're at the coast.

Thank you so much everyone, that’s all so useful Smile definitely going to have a look at Houston and Bridge of Weir as well as Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch.

@randomsabreuse great to hear that you like Kirkintilloch Smile do you know much about the local primary? Is there much of a community feel do you think?
I mentioned to DH that he could cycle it on a nice day and the commute by car was fine and he was definitely open to that idea. I think Kirkintilloch, Lenzie or Bishopbriggs could be a great fit for us.

There's a lot of primary schools in Kirkintilloch, think most are 1 class entry or smaller. We're at Hillhead which doesn't have a great reputation generally but we've been very pleased with the teaching and the effort made in lockdown. Results seem to reflect demographic as much as anything.

Parents all friendly and the on site nursery seems great.

We're on a great little street and the roads that the other parents we know are on seem to have a good community feel - although experience is definitely limited as we moved in lockdown 1 so not everything is open.

I've also ended up with activities all over the place (including Bearsden for music and tennis🙈) as they were the first to restart after lockdown rather than looking in Kirkintilloch in particular - as dedicated owned facilities could open sooner than things at EDLC facilities as much as anything.

I'm really pants at socialising but have felt welcomed even with my stereotypically posh southern English accent!

Hi OP
Did you see the 3 bed bungalow on Roman Drive for £230,000?
Work needed.

JustBlethering · 13/02/2022 10:25

Have you tried places like almond road, orchy crescent, deepdene road etc in Westerton?

OliveRhino88 · 13/02/2022 19:23

Thanks so much everyone for all your help! We’re considering Lenzie as it seems to tick most boxes and can still hopefully find something in budget! Plus the schools sounds pretty good 😊 if anyone lives in Lenzie and could let me know how you find it, that’d be great, thanks!

@17to35 I did see that one, looks like could be an amazing project but with a toddler and another on the way not really doable and the moment. Thanks for thinking of us though!

Tried to load pics but didn't work.

Just to give you an idea of what it's like in East Ren...this house went up for sale on 20th Sept at offers over £275k. Sold for just under £361k after going to a close 10 days later. It is crazy at the moment.

Ugh link isn't working. Search Clarkston sold prices and it's Gloucester Ave, the very first result.
