Hi there, hoping someone can give some advice. We currently love on devon, me, husband and our kids boy 7 and girl 3. My Husband loves scotland and we spend most of our holiday time up there. I love it 2 but am less keen only case my mums here in devon, also my brother and nephews are too. All my other family is in Glasgow (I lived there until i was 9) we loved braemar but its a bit far from airport for us etc... we want to live within an hour of Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport but fairly rural and preferably near mountains etc.... we were thinking a village near Perth or Stirling? But open to ideas, I'm concerned about my kids getting bullied about accents etc.... although I'm aware lots of English live there and loads of Scots live here... its probably more accepted now. Any help appreciated, we are also in healthcare. My husband is a paramedic and I'm a nurse.... help us lolol xx Grin

Lanark is nice and is an easy commute to wishaw general

Gillybum22 · 27/03/2022 20:07

Thank you. We are definitely thinking north of glasgow and very near mountains. We are going to try and nip up soon to see a few villages - killin, dunkeld and Bridge of allan. Then we will drive through loads more to look around... thank you all so very much.

Tbh you can be rural within a very short distance of both Edinburgh and glasgow airports. That's never a problem in Scotland. Speaking of what I know on the Edinburgh side of it, somewhere around Penicuik? Loads of mountain biking in the pentlands but good transport links to Edinburgh with lots to do for dc as teens. Very easy for the coast too and certainly not a trek to glasgow either being the right side of Edinburgh

If you want easy access to Scottish mountains you need to be looking north of the central belt.
Perthshire, Stirlingshire, Angus are a good shout.

Just found your thread whilst searching moves to Scotland..... most bizarrely I am in Paignton too! I have a 6 year old and worry about the English accent bit and schools. He is settled where he is but I really want to make the move
Gillybum22 · 03/04/2022 23:39

Small world! It seems the English accent thing is really not an issue. Seems almost non exsistant. We are looking more closely at dunkeld and killin. 2 different parts but seem to both be lovely. We are going to fly up soon and look round them both. Pm me sunnier if you want to chat.

Important to consider your 45 minutes traffic in the winter will likely become 1 hr 45 minutes by the time routes are cleared if you want rural.

Gillybum22 · 04/04/2022 21:47

Good information, thank you.

Near Glasgow and village which takes you straight to the mountains is Arrochar.

I suggest not focussing too much on the teen years. They are wee yet. You can move again when they are teens. They may be outdoor types they may not.

If you dont want to be a taxi service look at where the train lines to Glasgow are and live close to them.

The nearest mountains to Glasgow are in Argyll. So anything past Helensburgh would fit. What about Invererey?

For small rural villages I'd look around Balfron, close to your family in Bearsden and a very good school.

I wouldn't commit to somewhere without researching the schools to be honest.

On these threads Dunblane, Balfron, Gryffe (Renfrewshire) always come up as they stay high on the league tables.

If you sacrifice the mountains then staying close to relatives in Bearsden and Milngavie would be perfect. They are expensive because of the schools and would be much better for teens to be independent.

If DP is set on a remote village Gairloch is lovely but much further away.

Thank you. Very good advice x

Argyll is beautiful but very wet so you need to be ok with rain.
And midges!

Scianel · 05/04/2022 17:33

What I would say is that while the Arrochar Alps are maybe closer to Glasgow as the crow flies, the motorway to Stirling actually gives you better/quicker access to the Trossachs plus you're a bit more central for Edinburgh as well then.

MrsAmaretto · 05/04/2022 21:56

I would also say it depends what type of nurse you are (or what you might want to move in to. Killin is within NHS ForthValley but borders NHS Tayside. And not to far away is NHS Highland (Argyll). People from the village commute as far as Oban, Perth, Stirling, Aberfeldy and Glasgow. Dunkeld is NHS tayside and people commute to Perth, Dundee, Pitlochry Blairgowrie etc.

Nurse posts in practice nursing, community and district nursing, CPNs at both healthboards. Along with hospital specialities. Also nursing homes. Killin is covered by the Strathcarron Hospice and the Hospice nurse for the area lives in Edinburgh! My advice would be choose the area you want to live in then contact the chief nurses and Healthcentres to see what they can offer you - hard to fill posts are often sitting empty and not always on NHS jobs.

We are getting closer waiting for scottish ambulance service last interview.... can I please ask re aberfeldy? We think we are set on Dunkeld or Aberfeldy..... transport? Secondary schools? Thank you
