Stopover from London to Glasgow

Hi Scottish folk! I'm thinking of moving to Glasgow and am planning a trip up there for a week to check it out, look for a place to live etc.

I will be getting the train from London and will be wanting to have a stop over on the way. I will have my dog with me and he's okay with trains but the whole trip in one go would be a bit too much for him!

Any suggestions on a nice place to stop over for the night on the way????

Thank you!

Why not take the sleeper? You can get a private berth and dog can curl up with you to sleep.

Oh sleeper! I will investigate that! Thank you

Oxenholme? We got the train there many years ago. Nice walks for the dog and it breaks up the journey for you.

Lancaster might be easier than Oxenholme? Oxenholme is on the outskirts of Kendal and you'd probably need a taxi to a hotel which might not be so easy with a dog. Whereas Lancaster has places you can walk to from the station.

Will check out Lancaster too - thanks!!

Carlisle. There are some lovely walks not far from the train station along the river (Rickerby Park) so would be ideal to stay over, exercise the dog and carry on the journey the following day.

ElephantOfRisk · 11/01/2022 13:05

Do you need to split it with an overnight OP or could you just stop for a walk and lunch and then catch the next train? It's about 4.5 hours in total so could you do maybe 2.5 to 3 hours, break then do the rest?

That would give you the option of lancaster/oxenholm for approx 2.5 hours and 3 would get you penrith.

FFSFFSFFS · 11/01/2022 19:21

To be honest he gets pretty grumpy after a while abs I think three hours in a day is max for him…

But these overnight options sound lovely.

One of the reasons I want to move to Glasgow is that I’ve heard people
Are friendly there so all these helpful responses bode well!!

Why don't you have a look at the ticket split websites and see where abouts they split, might find somewhere nice and not obvious that way.

TheCanyon · 11/01/2022 19:41

Have just looked and it suggests Lancaster Grin

I had a sleeper cabin in Nov and it was £130. Jumped on at Euston at 11.30pm and was in GLC at 07.30am. Definitely cheaper than a ticket for split journey plus hotel.
My DC have been using the sleeper chairs regularly. Our Ddog has not been on sleeper but has travelled back and forward about six times (2 yr working cocker). We have twitter messaged Avanti West Coast and reserved a dog friendly seat. You do have to attach a photo of the dog as the twitter crew are funny that way Grin

Lancaster could be the winner! But will also think about the sleeper. This is the sort of style His Royal Dogness is accustomed to so you’ll understand why I have to get this right….

He is beautiful! Lancaster sounds like an option then for you. Good luck with the journey! You will love Glasgow and the surrounding areas x
