Scotsnet exams thread 2022

I haven't seen a thread for this years exams yet so thought I'd get the ball rolling (hopefully not too early!). Who has dc sitting exams this year and how are they getting on with their prelims so far?

ds(17) is in S6, he is sitting

Maths AH
Physics AH
Geography H (crash)
PE H (sat 2 years ago at NAT5)

They had their prelims in December which was good as they could relax over Christmas. He has had results back for 3 - will start with the good - Physics AH 70% 😀, then the no so good - Maths AH 45%, PE H 42% 😮.

He is very pleased with Physics, as he didn't expect it. The others he expected but seeing it has still been a shock. Hopefully in a good way and he will get his finger out as he hasn't been applying himself this year due recent first car freedom 🚗 + first girlfriend since he was 14 👫 + out together in said car 💏 + finally started his teenage rebelling phase 🙄.

Did anyone find it was similar in S6 with their teens? I think he is just scunnered this year with school and going through the whole studying and exam process for a 3rd year running. Many of his friends seem to feel the same this year.

(correction: 72% in prelim so he did scrape an A)

Alittlewornout · 02/04/2022 18:52

I think you are wise to have discussions with both schools before deciding on the jigher applications of maths as this is not recognised by several unis. I think from a quick look that applications of maths replaced life skills maths.
The jump from usual nat 5 maths to higher is huge and even those with an A at nat 5 can find it hard.
Its good though you have found this out now and can be proactive at finding a way forward. Like you I would be making contact with the parents in the class as agree it is likely most are unaware of the implications.

Aurea · 03/04/2022 08:17

I think applications of maths is considered relatively easy compared to straight maths. The top set at my son's school did it as well as Nat 5 maths with only a month or so of lessons (after they had finished the Nat 5 maths course).

My son is currently doing higher applications of maths and higher maths. He finds the applications course much easier but also very useful as it teachers things like statistics, finance, insurance etc and everyday maths skills. There is a project also that uses statistics. As it's easier, he can focus on his other highers which works for him. He wants to study computer science at university as well so he has been studying as much maths as possible as he is unable to study computer science at school.

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 03/04/2022 20:36

besides the past paper books, what other study guides are best for N5?

CuddlyCactus · 03/04/2022 21:01

Hodder and Gibson revision guides

WeAllHaveWings · 03/04/2022 23:07

For N5 maths ds used teejay maths, and the bright red course book (not the study guide). Both were very good and he used a lot, especially for English ruae.

He also used brightred for chemistry /Physics/modern/French and they were ok, he preferred his own class notes and only used them when his notes were not up to scratch or stuck.

We bought brightred for higher too, but he felt they didnt go deep enough and he ended up with a mixture of leckie and how to pass which were better.

If you are buying a few look for 2nd hand (make sure they are up to date versions after the 2018 modifications). Or look on young scot for their 20% discounts.

when are the next editions out for next years exams?

WeAllHaveWings · 04/04/2022 08:12

The revision guides don't come out every year, as long as they are after 2018 when the SQA revised the N5 courses they will be ok.

@JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue they don't publish new ones every year; if you look on the publisher's websites you can see clearly if any new ones are about to be released or not. I just bought an AH Geography book and the one on Amazon was out of date . . . I would it on Blackwell's website instead.

Bluepeach · 04/04/2022 08:19

*bought it on Blackwell's website instead.

Hi all. Can I join? Just dropped DD off for Easter school and can’t quite believe my PFB is sitting Highers.

Her friendship group is very bright and high achieving, which is great but has a little edge of pressure too. She’s worried about Maths.

Is it allowed to drop a tray of doughnuts or something off for the staff doing Easter school? I’m so grateful they’re giving up their time.

WoodstockJ · 04/04/2022 20:48

Can anyone recommend a good online resource for N5 physics? My ds missed the last week or so of the course teaching (due to covid) and has to sit a second prelim next week. Thanks 😊

Mistressiggi · 04/04/2022 21:31

@TonesAndShades that would be very well received I'm sure Smile

Lidlfix · 05/04/2022 10:58

Woodstock some amazing revision resources made by teachers delivering the courses are on YouTube. Your DS could go through core skills or past papers, depending on what he feels he needs.

I have shared loads with my classes, over to them now.

RandomNumb3rs · 06/04/2022 20:14

@Lidlfix that sounds like a good idea. I never thought of looking on YouTube. Are there any you recommend?

WeAllHaveWings · 06/04/2022 20:21

Ds's school recommended Mr Physics on youtube

My DS had his last day at school today. It feels very strange to think that wee lad I dropped off at the start of P1 has now finished. Still waiting to hear about some of his Uni choices, but any conditionals he has been given are quite low so he has pretty much ran out of enthusiasm for his current courses.

WeAllHaveWings · 08/04/2022 18:51

@applesandpears33 ds is on easter holidays this/next week then back in for 4 days and then off on study leave. Then only back in for exams and leavers day.

Still remember leaving that wee boy sitting proudly at his desk with his pencil case out in the classroom on day 1 of primary and then on day 3 him running out the queue to go in and burying his head in my jacket because he had had enough and didn't want to go back. Where has the time gone!

This is the only year we will do uni applications. Every step seems harder as they get older and the stakes feel higher. ds had his last offer, and top choice, mid March and the waiting was bad enough never mind April! He has a few friends who are also waiting, hopefully they and your ds gets their final replies soon, it isn't good it hanging over them going into exams. Is he happy to go to one of the offers he already has in?

OP posts:
applesandpears33 · 11/04/2022 10:45

He is happy with two of the offers he has received, one is unconditional and the other is conditional. He may be taking this more seriously than I'd thought - he has voluntarily taken himself off to supported study this morning even though it is in the holidays. Still not heard from the other university which is the closest to home. I've been watching the forums on The Student Room website and as far as I can work out offers have now started to be sent out from that uni, although they tend to come out late in the afternoon. Hopefully he will not have long to wait now.

HGC2 · 13/04/2022 10:07

This point in 6th year is a strange stage, DC has accepted place at first choice uni but still seems motivated to do well in his AH's so is up in leavers hoodie studying away. Hope to get the results from prelims that were done just before the break when back at school, 4 days left and that's it!

Blert · 16/04/2022 18:24

How is everyone getting on?

It’s just dawned on DS that in 3 weeks he will already have completed his first two N5s.

I think he’s doing OK though. He started revising a couple of hours per day from before Christmas, and basically just kept up that steady pace (and prelims were good).

I can’t figure out if he is doing enough or too little, although I am surprised by the number of his friends who don’t seem to have started anything yet.

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 18/04/2022 12:38

can anyone help with a saas application pls.

If a notification says 'award claimed' - does that mean its been accepted or you aren't eligible for anymore funding (have had funding in the past).

pajarito · 18/04/2022 19:31

I know it's not going to happen, but is anyone hoping the exams are cancelled again this year? DS has achieved 7As in Nat 5 prelims. However, there is no guarantee he will achieve these grades in the actual exams. Does anyone feel that the 2020, 2021 cohorts were incredibly fortunate?
