I haven't seen a thread for this years exams yet so thought I'd get the ball rolling (hopefully not too early!). Who has dc sitting exams this year and how are they getting on with their prelims so far?

ds(17) is in S6, he is sitting

Maths AH
Physics AH
Geography H (crash)
PE H (sat 2 years ago at NAT5)

They had their prelims in December which was good as they could relax over Christmas. He has had results back for 3 - will start with the good - Physics AH 70% 😀, then the no so good - Maths AH 45%, PE H 42% 😮.

He is very pleased with Physics, as he didn't expect it. The others he expected but seeing it has still been a shock. Hopefully in a good way and he will get his finger out as he hasn't been applying himself this year due recent first car freedom 🚗 + first girlfriend since he was 14 👫 + out together in said car 💏 + finally started his teenage rebelling phase 🙄.

Did anyone find it was similar in S6 with their teens? I think he is just scunnered this year with school and going through the whole studying and exam process for a 3rd year running. Many of his friends seem to feel the same this year.

@Bluepeach might there be a coursework element they're taking into account?

applesandpears33 · 22/04/2022 17:57

@stormsurfer Edinburgh Uni. From what I can gather from The Student Room forums it is massively oversubscribed this year and the grades they are offering are much higher than those listed on the website.

stormsurfer · 22/04/2022 18:06

@applesandpears33 ah I see. Think St A is the same :(

PrincessRamone · 22/04/2022 20:59

Is there any deadline for the SQA estimates?

FuckingHateRats · 22/04/2022 21:15

We had to have ours in by the time we went off for Easter.

stormsurfer · 22/04/2022 21:34

Think today is the very last day for them to be submitted.

PrincessRamone · 22/04/2022 22:11

SQA guidance says Any questions or queries regarding estimates – including the use of assessment arrangements – must be discussed and resolved with learners before the end of term to ensure they are not disadvantaged in accessing Appeals 2022. Submission deadlines for estimates are either 22 April or 30 May depending on the subject.

So I guess it is the “end of term” that applies for sharing them with students, which would be end of June?

stormsurfer · 22/04/2022 22:30

It would seem like that? Because both 22 April and 30 May are after end of Spring term.

I do know our estimates had to be with SQA today which ties in with the 23 April mentioned.

stormsurfer · 22/04/2022 22:31

Meant 22!

First exams for ds this week, H Geography on Wednesday and H PE on Thursday, then a break before the dreaded AH Maths on the 6th 🤦🏻‍♀️. Not much studying has happened over the weekend.

Main interest for him is now the prom. Another local school is probably cancelling their kids prom after some shocking behaviour in and around school on their last school day last week. Does everyones schools go a bit wild on the last day? Ds is now worried his year will do it on leavers day and they will have a last minute cancellation too.

Good luck everyone who has exams next week 🤞🏼

There were high jinks on the day before Leavers Day but as far as I know the prom is still going ahead. You've reminded me I need to do something about an outfit. DS says he wants to wear a suit but I'm not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of hiring one. I might try and persuade him to buy one on ebay.

There is some studying going on in this house, but not as much as I'd like. First exam is in ten days time.

Good luck to everyone.

WeAllHaveWings · 24/04/2022 23:35

The other school was more than high jinks, sounded more like a riot - naked pictures with teacher heads stuck on superglued to teachers cars, smoke and stink bombs, fire alarms set off and broken, fire engines out, washing up liquid on stairs, eggs and flour, and they started egging cars passing the school and egged a passing hearse. That poor family having that happen on the way to a funeral.

It is a pity as it is likely to be a small minority who got out of control and have ruined something all the kids have all been looking forward too.

While this was all happing at the other school ds and his gf were taking in cupcakes they had baked the night before as a thank you for the maths department as one of the teachers occasionally brings in cakes for their class 🤣 (his gf's idea not his, he is easily led, especially by his gf!). Lets hope his school learns from the others losing their prom.

We have just returned 5 suits we ordered online as none fitted right. The only one he liked was from moss bros was returned, the trousers were too tight and the next size up is sold out, so back to ordering more to try.

Wow! Egging a hearse is pretty shocking to be honest. Not fair to your DS and all the other kids but I can see why the school might feel they need to do something to strongly say how unacceptable this was. Perhaps they're worried about behaviour at a prom too?

Proms for the schools near me have all been I think.

applesandpears33 · 25/04/2022 07:18

The high jinks at DS's school was nothing like that bad. As far as I am aware there was no behaviour that impacted on anyone outside the school, nor was there anything personal to the teachers. I understand there was silly string, eggs, flour, water bombs etc. Basically, they made a mess of some of the communal areas. I felt sorry for the poor cleaners.

WeAllHaveWings · 25/04/2022 09:08

Not fair to your DS and all the other kids

Not ds's school, it was the other better local school. His prom is still on...........so far. They don't have their official leavers day until next month.

Wow @WeAllHaveWings that’s pretty shocking behaviours at the other school!

PrincessRamone · 25/04/2022 12:16

How much revision is normal for N5 level?

DS1 has been doing a couple of hours each day since before Christmas. Basically stated revising for prelims and didn’t stop. And now that he’s on study leave he’s doing 3-4 hours per day except when he has an exam.

I just have no idea whether that is normal or too little? His prelims were good and he seems to be getting through everything he wants to.

SayYouDontMind · 25/04/2022 12:33

I’ve currently got a DS asleep on the sofa after a night of D&V 🙁Had to go into school this morning to drop some things off but returned home, had some Dioralyte and crashed out. His first exam is tomorrow. It’s his weakest subject and he was hoping to do loads of essays under timed conditions these past 48hrs and he’s fit for nothing. I’ve never seen him look so ill.

I’m hoping he rallies after this sleep and can get some revision in this afternoon/evening. Does anyone know what would happen if he was still having a dodgy stomach tomorrow? Can he tell someone ahead and ask to sit at the back of the hall in case he needs to make a quick exit? Can he have a bucket by him?! What if he can’t even sit the exam?

Fortunately it’s only his Higher exam (he is taking 3 x AHs too) and he’s got two Unconditional offers for Uni. Currently in this academic year he’s had COVID, a bad bout of tonsillitis and now this. He managed to get an A in his Prelim for this Higher and he’s keen to get the same in the real thing.

applesandpears33 · 25/04/2022 13:00

@SayYouDontMind I'd contact the school this afternoon and try to speak to someone. If it were DS I would want to speak to the head of his house to explain the situation.

I hope he feels better soon.

SayYouDontMind · 25/04/2022 13:23

Have contacted school and am awaiting a call back. One good thing is that he's tested negative for Covid.

WeAllHaveWings · 25/04/2022 13:28

Oh no! Awful timing to be ill.

The only things we have been told is if anyone is off sick for an exam they need to provide a doctors note as soon as possible. ds has been given an exam timetable with a fixed seat number for each exam as they do the attendance register by seat number. So swapping seats might not be possible.

Also, it is unlikely they will want a pupil with such recent D+V and potentially infectious in the school/exam hall at such a critical time.

Hopefully you will be able to speak to someone at the school to guide you exactly what to do. Hopefully if he can't sit the exam the evidence for the A estimated grade will stand up to SQA scrutiny.

OP posts:
PrincessRamone · 25/04/2022 13:36

Oh @SayYouDontMind that’s awful for him. Keeping my fingers crossed that he wakes up feeling much better.

SayYouDontMind · 25/04/2022 18:21

So, have spoken to the school who say they will need to see a doctor’s certificate. He managed to speak with a doctor at our practice who has diagnosed a gastro-intestinal upset (or words to that effect) and has issued him a 7-day line. Not sure if that’s what the SQA mean by a certificate but will speak again to the school tomorrow. The Doctor didn’t think he needed to do a PCR.

I’m sure he’ll probably bounce back in the next 24 hours or so (at least I hope he does because he’s got a lot of revision to do!) He’s crashed out to sleep again now and I’m hoping this doesn’t linger too long or spread to the rest of the family!

Luckily his next exam isn’t till 4th May. Once, again, am grateful that he got good marks on his Prelim and tests recently that gave him a Grade A prediction and also that his first exam was just an ‘extra’ Higher.
