Hi. Does anyone have any reviews on Hutcheson Grammar Secondary and St Aloysius College in Glasgow? What are the chances of getting a bursary for lone parent working? What is entrance exam like for S1 for both? Thanks in advance

Hi there- the entrance exams for S- entry to private schools in Glasgow are quite soon (January). It might be a good idea to call the schools to register asap. The chances of getting a bursary depend on your household income (every school will have a cut off e.g no household income of £60k+ (perhaps, for an example) would be eligible. If you are eligible according to household income it then depends on your child performing well in the exam. Hope that makes sense. Good luck!

Sorry don't those schools but have experience of Edinburgh private schools and would imagine Glasgow is pretty similar.

All schools must now provide means tested bursaries as a way of maintaining their charitable status. However they have a finite amount of money to allocate each year and once it's gone it's gone.
The key thing about bursaries is to apply early. For S1 entry most families will apply by October/November, the entrance exams are in January for entry in the August.

Contact the admissions officer at the school who should be able to put you in touch with the bursar or business manager who will deal with your bursary application confidentially. Do this as early as possible.

Most day schools have a very few 100% bursaries available for low income families but many prefer to spread the pot of money further by giving mainly 25-50% discounts.
It is income dependent and as pp has mentioned a household income over about 60k will not qualify for any assistance (certainly in Edinburgh schools)

Just be aware that many schools are having to help existing families who's income has been affected by covid so there may be less money available for new entrants at the moment.

Good luck

Have you looked at the school websites. For instance St Al's had a cut of date of 17.12.21 for 2022 admissions. I think are having their entrance exams fairly shortly. The website also has info re content of the entrance exams

www.staloysius.org/media/bursaryform2022-23.pdf
I would suggest you contact the schools and ask for tours which would give you more of a flavour of what you might be looking for.

Are you set on St Als or Hutchie?

I hear good things about Fernhill and Glasgow Academy

You should definitely apply for bursaries at both schools.
My children have just left St. Aloysius and they enjoyed it and have a good group of friends.
Very welcoming school and inclusive ethos.
The deadline was December but sure you could phone them ASAP and apply. Good luck. X

I moved children school last year and similar to you am a lone parent! I was offer places at st Al’s however when I discussed bursary options I was told it would be unlikely for the duration of the secondary education! Speak to the admission office - I’m sure they will answer questions!

GLasgow academy offer bursaries for full school career IF the circumstances don't drastically change. So that could be reassuring.
That said public schools in glasgow are generally better than English schools. So private school is far from a necessity.
