Nursery restrictions

My daughter goes to Nursery, uses her funded 30 hours. She's 3.5 so in her 1st year of Nursery not preschool year. Before Christmas hols, there was talk of reducing the kids hours to reduce the amount of kids in the sessions, critical childcare taking priority of course (doesn't apply to my daughter)

Does anyone know of anything been confirmed for this yet? I have a newborn and really rely on Nursery to keep my daughter entertained and she is so so happy there. Are we expecting an announcement this week from FM? Anyone got any insider knowledge? I was really hoping they were trying to avoid this now.b

I'm not in Scotland but I'd speak to then tomorrow to ask for clarification around the previous message.

If they are reducing hours, I'd imagine they will either have to pay the extra funding back or will have it reduced. In England this is what happens.

If the issue is lack of staffing, there isn't really much you can do if it's a short term suggestion of a few days but this seems slightly different.

I also think because they are a private setting they can set their own hours (I might be wrong) but again, they will have to declare the reduction to the local authority as if it's the same as England, nurseries are paid per child, per hour and this amount is sent directly to us to pay for their care.

Also guidance is just that, guidance so unfortunately they don't have to follow it but you can certainly ask the question.

They are bizarrely interpreting the current Scottish guidelines. Personally I would stand firm and say she needs to attend I would also ask for the detail of what exact guidance it is they are trying to adhere to as its not the Scottish one!
Are they in groups so toddler/antepreschool/preschool? As that's all they would need to do and ensure staff are with their group.

My DS is in private nursery no change to his hours at all. It sounds like they are going OTT if I'm honest!

It's odd for a private nursery to follow school terms and timings, I've never heard of that. We have stand alone children's centres here not attached to schools that do so but they are council run like the school nurseries, but yes they are making up the rules whatever they are and I guess a private has more leeway to do that.

ecceromani · 04/01/2022 11:35

@liveforsummer I think it's more common in rural areas.
One of my colleagues kids went to such a nursery in order to stay local.
Was originally a playgroup which, when funding came in for 3 and 4 year olds, expanded into preschool nursery provision. It followed same curriculum and terms as school nurseries.
Although strictly speaking it was "private" it was actually a registered charity run by a committee. I could see that sort of place maybe being more risk averse in their interpretation of guidance

liveforsummer · 04/01/2022 11:44

@ecceromani ah perhaps. I live in a city so private nurseries are money making machines 😆

HalloHello · 04/01/2022 13:58

I think all the kids in my daughter's nursery are funded, there's only 2-4 year olds there. We are fairly rural!
I will be interested to see what they say when they ring. They have small groups with their key worker that's all.

I am in scotland more in the countryside and we haven't had a change of hours.

Nicola sturgeon said under 5s only need to do a pcr if they have covid symptoms as a msp asked her today to say what the rules for testing was as some nurseries were trying to mandate testing for under 5s to attend.

I'm hoping it won't be a huge change, it would seem OTT. Especially now close contacts don't need to isolate in new rules from NS. I have emailed my local MSP for advice also. Nothing on Parent Club either. Thanks for replying!

For anyone keeping up with this (doubt it 🤣), heard from one of the other Mums today that they have adjusted the year round kids hours slightly and had advised those parents of this before the holidays and was done with full cooperation of the parents so looks like my daughter (who is term time only) isn't affected so all my fretting is for nothing 😃

That's good news. X
