Mocks didn't go great - definately some lockdown lost learning at play.
We've got the Leckie full student book and are going back to basics with home tutoring (luckily i have a maths based degree) but grateful if anyone found any good online resources. Surds were not a thing when i was a uni it turns out !!

www.rigourmaths.com/

By far the best site. I used it to pass my nat 5 maths as an adult. I did 30minutes daily and got an A.

Best resource. There’s a lot there. Start off with the essential skills which are easy then move into more exam type questions. There are links to videos there too.

Surds

Then do the skills questions plus exam questions

Thank you all! We just need to get into a routine so this is a perfect start. So glad we found out with early mocks. Lost learning is not really being talked about in Scotland at all (professionally i know it is much more so in England) and my self taught DD has big gaps it would seem.

@Doorawakens I teach Nat 5 Maths and I’m happy to help.

Ladylunchalot · 02/01/2022 23:09

Following this thread as dd is struggling with nat 5 maths and just scraped a pass in her prelim. The areas she's struggling with are surds and indices which were covered in lockdown. She's not alone as most of her year group are struggling with these areas too.
We've looked online for a maths tutor but most are online and dd would prefer face to face.
Will give her the details of these sites. Many thanks.

@Doorawakens @Ladylunchalot

Helpful videos. Make sure they learn the rules for both surds and indices (they’ll be at the back of the chapters in their textbooks)

We found national5maths website excellent for getting my DD through her prelims. She had huge gaps in her knowledge and little confidence due to lockdown. . We used the free resources on the site, the topics in a nutshell were great. Now, if only nat5 computing had a similar website, as that prelim did not go well...

I've asked school what they are going to do (i would be really worried when most of the top set class barely scrapes a pass) and hoping they must also be thinking about what extra things they can put in place.

It's worrying the gaps and must be like this across most of Scotland- why isn't anyone talking it about it though? This can't be helping the attainment gap. DD is just lucky that i can help her at home.

Teejay maths books have lots of q+a and ds found it helpful for nat5 (not as good for higher) but hopefully your school will be able to provide lots of q+a anyway.

Best thing that worked for ds was doing a past paper, identifying trouble areas then focusing on them, watch maths teachers videos on youtube, then lots of practice before trying another paper.

I couldnt help him with the actual maths but helped with the youtube/Internet searches to find examples.

I tutored mine through NAT 5s last year
Took leave of absence from work
He didn't seem to have learned anything at school
Feel so sorry for kids whose parents can't help
Attainment gap must be getting bigger

Surds were a challenge here. Took us weeks for what is supposedly a small part but apparently a good building block for higher. National5 website was good but also YouTube has been a valuable resource for much of the Nat5 curriculum. Generally watching US or Canadian teachers.
