Will schools and nurseries be forced to close early?

I was wondering, given the ominous SG mutterings and announcements due next week, if any teachers/ early years practitioners had heard any whisperings yet of the schools and nurseries closing early for Christmas? Do we think it could happen, or will they extend the festive break again and just assume everyone can't juggle work and young kids and home schooling in January?

Obviously we'll now already be running the gauntlet of increased tracing and testing, but I can't shake a sinking feeling that if they can't shut down hospitality before Christmas that the schools will take the hit...

Ours are supposed to be open right up until 22nd December. Wouldn't be surprised if they closed at the end of the week before

LOL as if schools hear before anyone else!!!

We are told to listen to the announcements same as everyone else.

I know people perceive that teachers 'hear whisperings' or know about this stuff in advance but we definitely don't! We hear about it on the news with everyone else. I don't think schools will close again personally but who knows!

WouldBeGood · 11/12/2021 11:54

I think they will close by default because of the new isolation rules. Both because of contacts, and because of the risk to Christmas of potential contact tracing.

Yes sorry, I know that comms to schools and nurseries have been woeful, I just remember in previous times over the past 21 months (Sad) sometimes teachers have mentioned being told to prep for blended learning or prepare home schooling activities.
I'm just flapping at the thought and just in disbelief that we're discussing all this again...

I really doubt it. We stayed open last year until the 22nd (I think, it was late anyway).

We haven’t heard a single thing but we will be making sure everyone has their log ins this week, just in case.

WoodstockJ · 11/12/2021 14:20

They have always said that schools would be the last to close and the first to open, so there is no way that they can close schools to keep hospitality open. However, some schools will close due to rising case numbers and staff shortages.

WouldBeGood · 11/12/2021 14:26

Schools are already closing owing to contact isolating amongst staff

Rae36 · 11/12/2021 14:30

We've only got a week if school left so I can't
see a planned early closure but i can see staff shortages resulting in closures. Tensions are high among my exam year kids right now. Again. Poor things.

Scarby9 · 11/12/2021 14:35

No.
Schools and childcare settings won't close early.
Except for those that are unable to stay open because of lack of staff, of course.

ecceromani · 11/12/2021 14:47

As things stand I can't see them closing schools.
However our schools are in until 22nd.
Iif omicron cases really take off over the next week (like they're expecting) are Gov really going to be happy to have thousands of unvaccinated primary kids mixing freely in school and then seeing grandparents/great grandparents 3 days laterConfused

And lots of families probably won't LFT test their kids on Christmas day as they won't want to cancel family Christmas

Iwantthesummersun · 11/12/2021 16:25

We know nothing. As usual. However I can see us shutting as there won’t be enough staff should they be in contact with someone with covid. We are already teetering in the brink as far as staffing goes so I can see it snapping. We are due to close on the 22nd. I wish it was the 17th with an earlier return in January.

Kshhuxnxk · 11/12/2021 19:30

Well, given there was a full on Christmas party in my local last night for teachers (no ventilation - only one window and I can see if from my house - it was closed), all pissed as farts and hanging all over each other at last orders- yep there probably will be. Clackmannanshire schools - watch out!

Lidlfix · 12/12/2021 21:40

Good, rates in Clacks have been so high throughout that those weary teachers have likely all had Covid twice and been triple vaxed. At least that's what my Clacks' colleagues have experienced.

Teachers don't close schools.

If you're judging teachers I presume you are not going out either. I hope you don't work in hospitality they are really feeling all those night outs being cancelled. Personally, I'll lose my £5 deposit whilst the restaurant will lose at least £25.

Thankfully in real life parents are supportive not judgemental.

WouldBeGood · 12/12/2021 22:12

I think if anyone has earned a night out it’s teachers!
