Trip to Edinburgh with 6yo

Any hidden gems I should be taking my 6yo son to? We usually do the Fossil Shop in grass market, Oink and National Museum of Scotland on our days there, but its been a while since its been just me and him (11 month old sister usually there too) and want to make it a really special day out. Will be visiting the Christmas Market if he can cope with the crowd. He's super intelligent, inquisitive and also silly.

Any local tips for a Fifer? Will be training it, but don't mind jumping a tram if needed.

The zoo is out, we go there often!

Dynamic Earth, esp if do planetarium

ElephantOfRisk · 02/12/2021 00:08

I'm a bit out of touch with what's open, but you could try the national story telling centre? Greyfriars Bobby? do they still have reindeer at Christmas time at the West end of princes Street? The carrousel is usually there too. Camera obscura? John Lewis to see the decorations and toys? Really miss jenners for that.

TheBabyBoo · 02/12/2021 01:05

Lego shop

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/12/2021 01:20

Definitely Camera Obscura (although I don't know what it's like since covid).

Again, not sure about since covid, but China Red might be fun to eat at.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 02/12/2021 03:18

Ice skating at George St, lunch and a visit to the huge sweet shop on princes st 😄
See santa at the Christmas market?

Redsquirrel5 · 02/12/2021 03:23

There is an amazing tree at the Dome. Someone sent DH a picture of it.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 02/12/2021 07:11

Camera obscures is great fun at that age. I've not been to the museum for a while, but I'm sure I've read on here that the interactive stuff is all still roped off.

Lego shop in St James' and some child friendly options for lunch there in the basement - noodles, pizza etc.

There are events on at the storytelling centre so worth a look to see what is on when you're going.

The tree at the Dome is fabulous, but I think the grill room, where it is, has been booked up for months.

Recently took my 7 year old to royal yacht brittanie and it was a great couple hours. He was really into it/

rookiemere · 02/12/2021 07:20

I've heard that the Christmas market is ridiculously busy, so I'd avoid that if you're here at the weekend

Groovee · 02/12/2021 08:36

Camera Obscura

SymbollocksInteractionism · 02/12/2021 08:39

Yes St James for lego shop is a good shout, they also have a Hamleys.
The pizza place on the top floor was lovely and very reasonable too.

rookiemere · 02/12/2021 08:41

@SymbollocksInteractionism we've been to that pizza place - Salerno I think it's called - seriously impressed by the quality and low price of the pizzas.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 02/12/2021 08:45

@rookiemere

Yes it was delicious. The side portions of dipping bread in olive oil and balsamic onions were lovely too (making myself hungry now!)

emmathedilemma · 02/12/2021 10:18

If you're here this weekend there's a Santa parade on Saturday morning through Stockbridge and the reindeer usually hang out in the park all weekend greatscottishevents.net/virtual-christmas-challenge/
Definitely the Lego shop (be prepared to queue to get in), Camera Obscura or Dynamic Earth.
There's a big wheel at the Christmas markets if you've got a head for heights.

Invisimamma · 03/12/2021 19:00

My ds loves Coro the chocolate cafe on Frederick Street. You can get fondue, pancakes, chocolate pizza, Milkshakes etc.

Camera obscura is a good shout too.

There's a new lego store in the St James Quarter.

gemmasaurus · 09/12/2021 23:27

CAMERA OBSCURA ❤️ you won't regret it! It's on the royal mile, I took my 8 year old son here and we both loved it! Such an unforgettable day out!

Kitkat151 · 09/12/2021 23:39

There’s a Harry Potter shop as you walk down to grass market....really quirky ( might be Victoria St)
