Making some stovies this evening-haven’t had them since I was a kid! What food have you not had for ages but love?
@ElephantOfRisk I don’t find the soup too salty made using that recipe but good point if someone was concerned about their salt intake.

I definitely find it too salty using supermarket meat joint in comparison to the butcher ham hock though. Not taken in a lecturing way at all :) I do use Kallo stock cubes where I can as I find them nicer, but their ham one is really hard to get a hold of, so tend just to use whatever is there.
That's good to know about the butchers hock as I tend to go unsmoked with everything from the supermarket anyway, i suspect that an overly salty hock in the past is probably what put me off. I also use Kallo cubes as a preference and also can never get the ham ones!

DH has a slight intolerance to too much salt (it makes him wheezy) so I tend to under salt while cooking and DS and I add more if we need.

I made lentil soup today and we're having mince, tatties and mealie tomorrow.
My favourite would be my mums tattie soup. I've tried to make it myself but it just never tastes the same

Vesta beef curry

grafittiartist · 29/11/2021 22:18

Nans Potato scones.

@ElephantOfRisk

I make stovies and lentil soup quite regularly but I'd love some proper home made rice pudding.

No one else in the house eats it so I never make it. I did do some in the slow cooker years ago. It did taste very like the one my DM would make in a tray in the oven, she'd either sprinkle it with currants or brown sugar.

I did mince with dough balls last week too. Just can't beat good old comfort food.

It's the same in my house - am the only one who likes rice pudding. Could eat it all myself though 😂😂

Good old fashioned warming food

Corn beef patties, the left over boiled potatoes from the night before, mashed in with a can or corn beef, made into rounds and covered in flour and fried till there was a wee crust, and served with beans. Food of the gods.

That's one meal for next week sorted, sounds delicious 😋

Skirlie! I love skirlie with my roast chicken dinner!

Heelancoo · 29/11/2021 23:20

@iloverainandrainbows what’s skirlie?

Really want some drop scones and rice pudding 🤗

Oh my that takes me back. I hated stovies, the whole house steamed up when my Mum made it, and she would make a pan of the stuff that lasted us for 3 days?!

But when my nana made a scottish fruit dumpling, I swear, family I'd never even heard of tipped up for a slice (sprinkled with salt). She boiled it or steamed it in a pillowcase as I remember.
And Scottish tablet was the best sugary sweet ever!

Bashfulinseduary · 30/11/2021 00:32

You can find really good Scottish recipe videos on YouTube channel "what's for tea". Cheryl does a weekly round up of her family meals that often reminds me to make something from my childhood.

JamMakingWannaBe · 30/11/2021 00:36

Did anyone else have picked beetroot with their stovies (rural NE Scotland)?

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 07:50

There's a Facebook group Homemade Scottish Recipes (which seems to be mainly about 7 million ways with stovies 😂) that you might enjoy. Lots of folk eating beetroot with their stovies.

ssd · 30/11/2021 08:51

Stovies, mince and tatties, fruit dumpling 🤮

I should have been Italian

weebarra · 30/11/2021 08:56

Oh wow!
My mum's drop scones were amazing, must try the recipe above. DD also loves fruit pudding, you get some in the Simon Howie breakfast pack in my local Tesco.
My lentil soup is ok, but not a patch on my mum's.

florafoxtrot · 30/11/2021 09:01

My Granny used to make amazing pancakes (drop scones) too - likely recipe was same as @ClarasZoo - but she would add it all to a jam jar and shake it up to mix - no food processor required!

I'm in the NE too. Definitely beetroot with stovies and skirlie with my roast dinner.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 09:06

If you want to cause a riot, post a picture of stew or mince on that Facebook page and say "ah, canny beat a guid bowl ae stovies..." then stand well back.

Bloodypunkrockers · 30/11/2021 12:09

I wish I could manage to make lentil soup properly

Mine always separates so you get a layer of oily liquid, then thick sludge underneath

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 12:14

where is the oil coming from? Or is it just that the solids are sinking?

I blend mine and it's usually fine, leftover in the fridge are generally k too. Usually needs an extra dash of water and a decent stir before going in the microwave though.

Bloodypunkrockers · 30/11/2021 13:45

I don't know where the oil
Is coming from. I just use stock cubes, vegetables and lentils

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 14:03

Then I think it's just liquid with maybe a touch of oil from the cubes or if you've fried off the veg sitting on the top. Maybe just need to stir it up well. It can do that when cooking so you need to be careful not to let it sit without stirring for too long as it'll stick and burn.. Mine seems okay afterwards but that could be because I've blitzed it with the stick blender?

Justcannotbearsed · 30/11/2021 14:06

Tablet - my dad used to make the best tablet.

Home made mince pied (beef mince) with boiled floury potatoes

A scotch pie brought back with us from Scotland when we visited granny - served with baked beans on the top.

Square sausage.

Justcannotbearsed · 30/11/2021 14:07

and drop scones - which we called pancakes. I was very confused when I went to a friend's house and was served pancakes which were skinny flat large things.

I'll try the blending bit. Smile

@babblingbumblingbandofbaboons the soup is on ( cheating by using bacon ) and DH making a plum and pear crumble. House smells so good!
