Somewhere rural for dog walking. Not city/town. Any ideas ?

Basically anywhere on the eastern half of Scotland! It's drier and has far fewer midges than the west. Midges are also seasonal, mainly late Spring/Summer, so early Spring and Autumn are pretty good anywhere.

Babdoc · 26/11/2021 21:10

Sorry, you specified Summer - east then!

Tuibbi · 26/11/2021 21:31

Yes I am aware it’s more difficult in summer to find non midge places and struggling to think where to go. East Neuk of fife maybe

Do you think Pitlochry area would be safe?

I think Pitlochry may be a bit midgy. I would stick to coastal areas if it's a big issue for you. East Lothian? Moray Coast? We loved Findhorn. East Neuk is lovely.

Stayed north of Bridge of Cally a few years ago in July - no midges.

Babdoc · 27/11/2021 08:56

I live in Perthshire, about 45 mins drive from Pitlochry. I've never found midges a problem there.
In Fife, I've only been bothered down by Loch Leven, where they mass at the waterside and on the island in the summer.

Thank you. I wonder how much relief you get being on coast. I know lochs are the worst place. But by the sea is better? So west coast by the beaches, would that be a bit better?

Dornoch/ Golspie/ Black Isle lots around those areas.

East Lothian - beaches and flight museum

St Andrews - beaches, architecture, good shops, secret bunker

The dumgal coast from Dumfries to the mull of Galloway. Beaches, gardens, cream o Galloway farm, forest, nice towns, Wigtown the book town, quiet and not touristy.

Cattitudes · 27/11/2021 09:43

We found islands from Mull south (Mull, Islay, Arran) relatively midge free this year but it all depends on the weather and your frame of reference. We were on the coast which I think helps. Far fewer than Skye/Glencoe but more than Stirling. What we gained in terms of midge free days we lost in tick hunting! If you can afford to wait before booking then this midge forecast seemed fairly accurate.

I’ve done the small isles a few times (Eigg, Muck, Canna etc) and didn’t find them midgey. I’m aware others might as they’re so westery but they were always okay in July/august.

soupmaker · 27/11/2021 09:51

I'd avoid Perthshire. We were always sent to spend a week with cousins who lived on Loch Tay as kids in the summer holidays. An absolute midgefest.

I'd stick to the East Coast. Fife a great option. Lovely costal path for walking. Great beaches.

Tuibbi · 27/11/2021 10:02

Thank you. Lots of useful info. We have done east neuk and moray coast a few times so fancied somewhere different, but maybe they are best areas in summer. Would love to try the small isles though
