..and yes, great when they can accommodate everyone with no-one trying to shout anyone down. No checking in stuff either, though it was a booking so they have our details anyway.

It’s really nice to hear of bustling places. 😊

I was really full. But we also bought a crusty loaf from the Freedom bakery from a wee shop.. cannot resist!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/12/2021 18:12

DS1 is away to the cinema with old school mates so is getting the biggest popcorn and drink to last throughout the movie but he was stuffed after our meal. It's not often we do 3 courses and he had most of DS2s starter and a bit of mine as well as his own.

No dinner to cook and no dishes to do and i'd like to treat myself to a wee bailies on ice but I drove today and DS1 will need picked up at some point and everyone else has had at least a couple of drinks already. Didn't plan this very well.

It is indeed lovely to hear that there are still places that are busy. This must be so hard for hospitality owners.

DH's sister & her husband came for dinner today. We've not seen them since they moved to England so it was lovely. Meant that we spent the morning tidying & cleaning so now I get to enjoy a tidy lounge!

We had a musical evening for our Christmas Around the World advent calendar, which was fun. The girls sang so cutely, and did well playing (one-handed) pieces they learned today on the piano.

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 20:21

How lovely @GrouchyKiwi

I remember when the DCs were young they’d ask me who was coming to visit when I tidied the house 🤣

GrouchyKiwi · 19/12/2021 20:27

Grin I love that WouldBeGood.

When DD3 was 3 she asked me the same thing: "Who's coming to visit today?" "No one." "Then why are you vacuuming?" Grin

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 20:48

🤣 least not just me!

My dogs were scared of the vacuum cleaner too, as they so rarely saw it 😳

ElephantOfRisk · 19/12/2021 20:55

Ha, I had to do extra tidying (just in places that could be seen) as DS2's GF was being dropped off by her parents and I had no idea if they might be coming in or not Grin what a bunch of slatterns we must be! The outside of the and threashold got a wipe too.

I can't remember so much at Christmas, but I do remember when I was a child, every Hogmanay there being a rush to have the house cleaned from top to bottom as A: there would be guests (open house) and B: you can't go into new year with a dirty house. We were a big family so were all basically allocated a room. As I was the youngest, mine was usually the stairs and upstairs hall. I had to hand brush the stair carpet with a stiff hand brush, top to bottom and then use the carpet sweeper on the flat bits. Then wipe down the hand rails and wood at the side of the stairs and any grubby marks on the walls with a damp soapy cloth. If I got that finished then I got to wipe down the front door and beat the door mat Grin. I can remember a couple of years being given the bathroom to do. I'd get my reward later with a few snowballs in a big tall glass with a plastic stirrer that had the babysham deer on it.

They didn't come in but it was only afterwards that I realised that we'd had to move our drinks storage unit into the hall to make space for the Christmas tree and as it was DHs birthday recently, it is heaving with about 20 bottles of whisky. That may have not given the best impression! Or then, maybe it would? Grin

Not that I’m posh, but I did the brass stair rods and twiddly banisters 🤣

Oh get you! Grin.

I lived in a council house. I think we had foam backed swirly brown nylon carpet, fitted by my mum or dad and it tended to fray at the edge (no doubt helped on by my fingers). I used to fall head first down the stairs quite a lot, regular concussions and carpet burns. I'm actually convinced in retrospect that I did it deliberately, probably looking for attention.

When I Mr Muscled the oven they thought we must be moving Blush

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 21:25

@Lidlfix that’s funny, DP laughs as I’ve told him that I’ve always moved before cleaning the oven 🤣

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 21:27

@ElephantOfRisk I also fell a lot, including falling up said stairs and knocking my front teeth out, because I was wearing slightly ill fitting sandals. I was about seven, but some poor footwear choices never change … 🤣

Haudyourwheesht · 19/12/2021 21:32

I remember the first time I took my daughter to one of these role play kids places (she was about 3) - she was in the play kitchen and had no idea what the iron or ironing board were far.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/12/2021 21:33

You are meant to clean the oven?! Shock Grin

Hopefully it wasn't your adult teeth @WouldBeGood?

I can clearly remember kneeling at the top of the stairs looking down and then finding myself at the bottom. I also used to race down them a bit to escape the ghost at the top of the stairs - obviously - and then slip on the poorly fitted, slippy nylon carpet in my poorly fitting, slippy nylon socks...

We pay a man to clean the oven every year just before Christmas. He makes it look brand new. My mother is horrified at the thought of it.

Council house upbringing here too @ElephantOfRisk, also had to clean the house from top to bottom for the new year!

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 21:44

Fortunately not @ElephantOfRisk!

I got my first oven cleaner man in last year, and feel I’m
Committed to my house now 😃

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 21:45

My family is horrible though. Despite the seeming advantage.

We were too poor to be horrible 😂😂😂

Only kidding though, advantage is not always financial.

I keep putting off cleaning the oven. I'm still holding out for a new kitchen. Last time the oven door randomly exploded and the new one is the same model as it was all that was available when we wanted to get it.

WouldBeGood · 19/12/2021 22:06

I used to love going to my friends’ “poor houses” where they liked each other and were nice 😃

New kitchen a possibility @ElephantOfRisk..? Exciting
