Anyone have experience of choosing a c-section in Edinburgh as a preference?

Would be interested to hear experiences

I did. It was a positive experience. What bits are you looking for info on?

Fizzyrascal · 08/11/2021 22:31

Thanks for the response. Did you come across any resistance to your choice at all? That’s really what I’m slightly concerned about

None at all. I chose an elective c section due to my first birth being an emergency c section. My midwife was very supportive, I was thebln referred to a consultant who I had one phone call with, she outlined the risks of a c section and chance of a successful vaginal birth (was about 70% I think). I said that I wanted to book a c section and that was that. No problem at all

Excuse typos, typing one handed as feeding my wee one Smile

Same here, also booked a planned (at the Royal) after an emergency section with my first.

No problem in terms of pushbacks, very much an "as long as you've done your research" type response. They make sure you are aware of the risks and are baseing your choice on correct information, but that is as far as they went. No attempt to convince me to change my mind at all.

Thanks both for sharing your experiences. I’ve read that they’re more likely to agree where you’ve previously had a c section rather than force a VBAC.

Just wondering what they’d say in my situation where it’s a first time pregnancy?

My experience is over 20 years old now. I also had an EMCS with my first (back to back large baby, long labour and he was stuck fast). 2nd baby due 13 months after the first, I'd had pain in the scar, also meant to be a large baby, also lying back to back. Consultant was sort of okay booking in an ELCS but wanted me to wait until my due date on the basis that they thought DS1 was a week late (not by dates he wasn't).

Anyway my midwife was the person doing the booking so she just booked me in a week before due date and whilst doing the OP the consultant commented that the previous scar would never have held during a labour so just as well I'd had a CS! Hmm

Do you have any particular points you can emphasise with them for your choice?

Fizzyrascal · 12/11/2021 21:47

Thanks elephant for sharing. I have a list of reasons based on detailed research. I’m just trying to gauge whether they’ll try to talk me out of it.

I’m wondering whether there’s an agenda to push natural birth. I’ll be assertive but just wonder what I’ll be up against.

It's difficult to know as I would think that different consultants might have different views, you may have to push for it in which case, having all your reasons and research will be valuable. On the other hand they may be perfectly happy to grant based on your request.

Best of luck.

I wish this was 49 years ago!
No one could choose to have a c section then. I had a EMCS for my first baby in 1969, reason being him going into transverse lie in labour after my waters broke and his head had not engaged. He became very distressed and past loads of meconium so there was a very quick dash to theatre and he was brought out only just alive and my life became in danger also.(I am on another thread on here relating to this).
When I became pregnant again I was told by consultant that I would be given a 'trial of labour"despite my short stature and narrow hips. Not surprisingly this failed, my contractions suddenly stopped after many fruitless hours, baby's head not engaged and danger of previous scar rupture which was symptomatic of contractions ceasing.
Another very quick dash to theatre baby brought out in not good condition again, but all eventually went well and baby is now a grandfather.
I had the tubal tie done with this section which had been decided on in the pregnancy if another caesarean was required as I refused to be 'tried' on again. If an ELCS was granted to me during the pregnancy and al future births I would never have consented to the tubal tie.
All the best of luck to you @Fizzyrascal, and I am also thinking of you @ElephantOfRisk, well done.
