Where to live commutable to Edinburgh with family

Hello, I have been offered a job in Edinburgh. I simply couldn't afford to buy there. I have two primary aged kids and am a single parent with essentially whole childcare on myself (relevant because I need to do school pick up and drop off which of course affects commute times).

Any wonderful Mumsnetters with wonderful ideas for where to look to buy a new home?

Other relevant points: I don't drive so someplace that has local fun, family things for kid and good transport. Budget for 3 bedroom would be £160k

TIA!

Trying to decide where to live. We are selling a 2 bed top floor flat in Portobello. We want a newer 3 bed with garden. We are both rubbish at diy, we want nice walks/runs from home. Joe plays three instruments so we might piss off any neighbours. I joined my now husband there two years ago so still a newbie. Love Roslin but so pricey. Would you buy a mid terrace teeny 3 bed in Roslin without a garage or a slightly more spacious with garage detached 3 bed in Gorebridge? Is it location location location more than space you live in?

Would massively depend where you work, for me.
You'd be better off starting a new thread by the way for specific advice Smile

Gorebridge is fine. Roslin is nice too but much quieter. I don't know which one I would prefer tbh but you hardly ever see anyone trying to exchange from Roslin which I'm assuming is a good thing.

@MartaE I'd opt for Gorebridge purely on the basis on it being on the train line.
