From the greatest bunch of misogynists ever. I've heard it all now.

While I have zero faith in the SNP, Helena Kennedy QC is in a different league.
She was interviewed on Newsnight on Friday night and said she’s doing a ‘deep dive’ into the issues affecting women in Scotland.
I may be overly optimistic but this gives me some hope that all may not be lost.

Honestly, it'll soon be illegal to say anything in Scotland.

I hope she shares this soon, I agree that she's a different league to the snp

Unless the deep dive considers women's need for single sex spaces, then it will be another wasted opportunity. In fact thinking about this - how is HK collecting her info? Am thinking of emailing her.

I agree completely that the low level sexism that exists in society, which is dismissed as fooling around or banter, and allows men to get away with all manner of behaviour, needs to be tackled. Genuine question though, will 'woman' be defined according to biological sex in this proposed legislation? Currently places like women's loos etc. are safe spaces that a woman can escape to if they're being harassed, and any man who tries to follow her will be robustly challenged. If these spaces are lost, either because of self ID or a move towards everything being gender neutral to appease the trans lobby, this is a significant blow to women's safety.

There is little point in planning specific legislation to tackle misogyny if in the mean time existing legislation has redefined 'woman' as 'anyone who feels like it' and single sex spaces (which exist for good reason) are lost.

MichelleScarn · 04/10/2021 09:32

Is it going to only take into account the SNPs idea of what a woman is, as this includes anyone who says they are, so Katie Dolatowski could say its a 'hate crime' they don't get to choose their prison.
I have no faith in them.

mapleleavesreturn · 04/10/2021 10:28

Another Helena Kennedy fan, I hope she can see that the best place to protect women would be with amending the hate crime bill and possibly adding a piece of legislation hanging off of that framework to broaden legislation around women's topics.

Otherwise I fear it's going to be gloop for lawyers to resolve. Can't resolve something in the existing legislation? Write more separate legislation and leave it up to case law to resolve the problems...

Selkiesarereal · 04/10/2021 13:05

Whilst this piece of legislation would be welcome, particularly in the current climate, we need to know what is a woman and whether our sex based rights will be maintained and not overlooked when convenient- looking at Edinburgh rape crisis centre for example.

Unless this happens nothing will change.

WouldBeGood · 04/10/2021 16:43

Dear god, can they not see how their policies are making misogyny and violence towards women acceptable?

And yes, they’ll just define women to include men so it will be pointless.
