At Andrews or somewhere else in Fife

I'm hoping to whisk DH away for a weekend for his birthday. He's impossible to get for but I know he'd like this. Was thinking of St Andrews. Ideally 4 star or above. Budget £300 a night. I know I can get something for that but I'd love it to be just fab for him. From the room to the food to the views. I've never been so hit me up with your recommendations Scottish MNers.

St Andrews is great for a weekend as there it lots to do. I have a home near by so can’t give personal hotel recommendations but the Fairmont is popular. Has a spa etc and a courtesy bus as its out of town. There is a Hotel du Vin and some rooms will have a sea view. Rufflets is a lovely country house hotel a few miles away. I have heard The Old Course is no longer as good as it used to be.

If you have a car the East Neuk is lovely to explore. Crail and Elie are my favourites but the accommodation in St Andrews will be better.

Peat Inn has beautiful rooms and lovely food. We had an overnight and did the tasting menu/pared wine and really enjoyed it. It's a bit out the way if you wanted to go out elsewhere though.

I looked at Rufflets. Thought it looked fab but I really like the sound of the Peat Inn... off to google! Thank you!

The Rusacks has just been renovated and I believe has a lovely roof bar and greta restaurant. It looms out over the Old Course and the sea and would be a great location.

Peat Inn is fab if you just want dinner and one night away but it isn't a two or more night place plus it is in a very rural place.

The Fairmont often does good deals but I find it soulless.

The Old Course Hotel is an absolute classic and has a lovely spa/gym area.

Rufflets is very old time country house hotel. I like it as a Sunday roast with gran sort of place. it is a little out of town but there are plenty of taxis.

Hotel du Vin is okay but nothing special.

I’ve stayed at Rufflets. A little out of town but as the poster above said, there are taxis. I really liked it but wouldn’t stay again for more than once night just because it is out the way. The food was amazing though.

We had a week in Fife in September. Such a great area to visit. Can't help with hotels as we stayed in an airbnb on the coast, but visited St Andrews and loved it.

The villages on the south coast were gorgeous- we walked from Anstruther to Elie and the coast path was lovely. The East Pier smokehouse in St Monans looked like it would be a great stop for a lunch (think it was pre-booked tables only), or The Ship Inn at Elie.

The chocolate cafe at Pittenween is worth a visit.

That is indeed a lovely cafe! We stayed in Pittenweem, which was a great base for the south coast.
