Moving to Stirling

Might be moving to Stirling next year. Where is a good area to live? Not worried about schools, more about it being a safe area, close to some shops, nice to walk around etc.

I’d be looking for a one or two bed flat, price range £120-150k. Might be able to push to £170k.

I'm in Stirling but just heading off for the weekend so it'll be a short answer but can be expanded later. Most places in that budget will be fine, it's a small city but avoid outlying areas if you want to shop. I'd maybe avoid Top of the Town in terms of city locations. You might also squeeze into Bridge of Allan on that budget and property size. Happy to look at any properties you are interested in and give a view.

We moved here about 18 years ago and have been happy.

Bratnews · 25/09/2021 12:29

I’d look at Riverside. Nice properties close to the town centre

GoldenOmber · 25/09/2021 16:03

Riverside nice. King’s Park area is lovely although pricey - you might be able to get a 1-bed in your price range. Causewayhead is cheaper and fine but a further walk from shops. You can definitely get a 2-bed for that in the centre, although it’ll be noisier in the nights and you might get some student neighbours.

Mrsjayy · 26/09/2021 20:58

Braehead or Riverside is probably your best bet for flats you are near town centre.

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 27/09/2021 16:24

Thank you that’s very helpful.

Avoid Cowane Street like the plague its in town centre but there is a lot of students and private let's drugs are rife . The baker street one is gorgeous w. Bruce Street is alright , and the last 1 I'm not sure where it is looks a new. Build maybe I Riverside which is nice.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 18:43

Bruce street is in an area where a lot of flats are rented out to students. I have 2 students myself so not tarring them all with the same brush, but you could end up in a block full of renters.

Barnton street is very city center and near the few clubs in Stirling so I think it can get a bit noisy/leery at night.

Baker street is a bit nicer I think, still city but in a quieter bit. This one has been (and still is?) rented out as an HMO so it would be worth trying to see if the neighbours are the also renters.

The St Rollock one looks like the new builds on the site of the old Stirling high, nice enough area but would be about a mile walk into the city. It would be the option to take in terms of low maintenance and if you have a car to accommodate.

Riverside area is very mixed in terms of property types, older flats and houses, ex council houses, newer flats (1970's onwards) and new build flats, also a mix of householders but I think the only negative is that people sometimes use the streets closest to town as free parking for the train/shops, if you don't have a car or have dedicated parking this might not be an issue.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 18:54

This is in Riverside:

Another Riverside one:

and another

THis is just a one bed but is a new build and very central:

There are also a couple in cambusbarron which is again a good option if you have a car. Cambuskenneth is lovely but properties don't come up often.

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 27/09/2021 19:25

Thank you, that’s really useful. Looks like Riverside is firmly in my price range and the name comes up a lot. That last one would suit me pretty well I think.

With the Baker Street one, the other property is also up for sale just now. In the description it says that they are Botha HMO compliant but don’t have licences just now due to a ban on licences in the area.

I’m in Central Edinburgh just now, so definitely looking for a place that’s a bit quieter.

The Cooperage key one looks nice!

Bratnews · 27/09/2021 19:37

Quay!!!! Blush

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 19:39

Oh that's maybe good on Baker street then as presumably they are trying to get owner occupiers or at least rented to families.

Do you need to travel for work or anything?

To be honest Stirling is pretty quiet but you know what it's like, you could get somewhere in the quietest area but still have a noisy neighbour. It's also pretty small so to be fair nothing is really very far for walking until you get out to Whins of Milton/Bannockburn etc. Torbrex is 60s suburbia but is also not far from Kings park area (i'd say this is probably the New Town equivalent). I'm from Edinburgh originally too.

Property is going pretty quickly at the moment.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 19:42

@Bratnews

The Cooperage key one looks nice!
yeah, it's a nice bit and you can walk over the bridge into Cambuskenneth or just walk right round the river and it's handy for the station and town too.
Etonmessisyum · 27/09/2021 19:54

Cambusbarron? Torbrex? There are nice flats at Beechwood. I’ve lived in a few places since we moved here 15 years ago. I really like it here. Currently between bridge of Allan and stirling. I wouldn’t recommend this area but loads of good suggestions, Baker St is nice. But I would visit some of the streets on a weekend evening as it can get noisy in town, but you’re in the centre so handy for everything.
Anyway good luck when you move, I’m sure you’ll find somewhere lovely.

Mrsjayy · 27/09/2021 20:22

My Dds inlaws have just moved into Cooperage Quay the flat is lovely she said.

Can I ask why you wouldn't live where you are at the moment? I fancy a move around that area- aiming for BOA but possibly will need to be closer to Stirling.
CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 28/09/2021 19:10

Thank you @ElephantOfRisk that’s really helpful. No need to travel for work for the next few years, I’m doing an online degree to career change.

I’m looking to actually move summer next year so I’m trying to familiarise myself now and find some areas to visit over the next wee while.

@Etonmessisyum that’s a good idea to visit during weekend evenings. I have considered renting for six months or a year first, but I don’t really fancy moving twice.

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 28/09/2021 19:35

I think that coming up for a few Saturday night breaks would be cheaper than renting for a while and would give you the same opportunity to suss out areas and walks and see how noisy it is of an evening. Though if you are coming by train, maybe wait until there are Sunday trains again as the bus ends up over an hour and half between Edinburgh and Stirling. I'm in suburbia so it's pretty quiet and I'm not out in town in the evenings often.

Etonmessisyum · 29/09/2021 17:44

@StarryEyeSurprise, I just feel where I am is a bit far out for me, I’ve always lived on the other side of stirling (Torbrex/Cambusbarron) kids are at school there, friends are there, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with here as such just no shop/park miles to school so I don’t really feel at home at all.

Canunot · 04/10/2021 23:26

I’d avoid the city centre tbh it can be very noisy and can be quite grotty after student nights, also parking can be a bit of a pain.

Causewayhead, Cambuskenneth, Cambusbarron and Bridge of Allan are what I’d consider to be relatively safe, also kings park but I doubt you’ll be able to get anything in your range.

From experience I’d avoid Raploch, Cornton, Riverside, St Ninians/ Cultenhove.

I’ve heard good things about Bannockburn, Braehead and Torbex, but can’t say I know them very well and only know a few people who live that way.

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 05/10/2021 13:47

Just realised that I’m not sure where all those areas are on the map @Canunot. Could you maybe describe them to me or point me in the direction of a map that shows them?

Drawn a bit of a blank with Google maps etc

I live near these areas its a nice place to live although some streets can be a bit iffy in Bannockburn.
