Somewhere nice to stay near Gretna

I’m getting married in Gretna Green next month and was wondering if there are any nice places to stay not too far away for a sort of mini honeymoon for a few days. Somewhere scenic with a few nice pubs and walking routes. Sorry, we’re not from Scotland so don’t really know the area so any suggestions would be much appreciated! Smile

Sorry can't help....but watching for replies.
Congratulations and hope you have a lovely day

WormYourHonour · 23/09/2021 23:07

Yes. There's lots.
Hth.

Only teasing.

I really liked Langholm. This was in 2010 mind you.

It's a small town, 20 mins from Gretna. There's pubs and a lovely rover to walk beside with fone lawns to relax.on etc etc.
That'd be my recommendation. 😁

Moffat - lovely little town and you can easy do day trips to Glasgow, New Lanark etc from there. Have a wonderful time.

TinctureThis · 24/09/2021 00:12

Annan is a pretty little town.

ElephantOfRisk · 24/09/2021 08:39

I also came to say Moffat, but if you are not bothered which side of the Border, you are really near the lake district which would give you lots of options too.

Sweetchocolatecandy · 24/09/2021 09:25

Thank you for the suggestions so far, will look into them Smile

Hi from near Gretna. What about Carlisle , it's just over the border, but 15 mins drive from Gretna good links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle by train and you can easily reach places in Dumfries and Galloway and the Lakes.
Carlisle itself has lots of nice cocktail bars, the Castle and walking nearby if you venture to the Lakes or Hadrian's wall is a stone's throw away xx

rookiemere · 24/09/2021 21:54

Pooley Bridge is less than an hours drive away, it's my new favourite place in the Lake District. Not too large but 4 decent pubs and a few more restaurants. Great walking on your doorstep- highly recommend the Dalemain Loop with a lunch stop in Dacre.

somewhereovertherain · 24/09/2021 21:56

Another place at Pooley?

Haggisfish3 · 24/09/2021 22:01

Nith hotel. Fab steaks and lovely place to stay with lovely walks along river nith.

reprehensibleme · 24/09/2021 22:03

Kirkcudbright is lovely.

Dumfries and Galloway has lots of lovely places, depends on your interests :
Wigtown for the books
Garlieston Bay - pretty harbour village and a lively walk to Whithorn.
Port Isaac
Rhins of Galloway and the lighthouse
Portpatrick - like Cornwall but quieter
Caerlaverock wetlands and wildlife Trust - we've always seen brilliant stuff here, hares, egrets, geese, a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

The Borders - so, closest bits to Gretna:
Eskdalemuir (and the Buddhist monastery)
Peebles
Dawyck Botanical Gardens
Newcastleton

Gizmo98765 · 24/09/2021 22:13

Lake District isn’t too far away
Carlisle

Depends on your interests, likes/dislikes budget. Do you want a fancy hotel or quiet luxury cottage/cabin in the middle of nowhere. Do you want a quiet rural location or somewhere with more going on and shops and places to mooch about etc?

Redtartanshoes · 24/09/2021 22:51

Moffat or pooley bridge would get my vote if you looking for quiet and nice

Redtartanshoes · 24/09/2021 22:51

Yy to Port Patrick also although it’s further away

felulageller · 24/09/2021 23:02

I'd do a tour of Galloway. There's lots along the coast. Pretty villages and beaches. Plenty of good hotel in Dumfries. Get some ice cream at the cream o Galloway farm. Visit the book town in Wigtown. The gemstone museum. Go cycling at Kirrotree. The botanic gardens. The most southern point in Scotland. If you get as far as cairnryan you can do a day trip to Belfast.

WormYourHonour · 24/09/2021 23:10

If you did want to travel a bit further OP...
I can happily and heartily.recommend Fort Augustus.
It could be the most beautiful place I have ever been in my entire life. I adore it there, I'd move there tomorrow if I had the money.

Fundays12 · 25/09/2021 00:04

I got married in Gretna which was lovely. Edinburgh isn't to far away and is nice.

Justcashnosweets · 25/09/2021 19:11

Dumfries and Galloway is beautiful, I live here so I'm probably biased! The coast is gorgeous but for nice pubs and restaurants, Moffat or Kirkudbright would be my choice.

Ladylunchalot · 25/09/2021 22:20

I'm down at Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat in the Lake District for the weekend and it's still as lovely as I remembered. It's about 45 minutes from Gretna so not far away and the lodges are lo.

Ladylunchalot · 25/09/2021 22:21

Opps I meant to say the lodges are lovely.

ElephantOfRisk · 25/09/2021 23:20

Shhh stop telling people about Keswick reach! Grin

I also like the lodges at Thanet Well, same company as keswick reach but a little more remote and better views.

VanCleefArpels · 25/09/2021 23:22

Just a couple of miles down the road is Netherby Hall in Longtown - it’s amazing. If you don’t want self catering the same people own the Pentonbridge Inn which is a spectacular restaurant with rooms. Totally recommend either for a romantic few days!

longtompot · 25/09/2021 23:26

We are staying in Moffat next year on our way up to our holiday near Skye. We stayed there many years ago for our friends wedding, though didn't really get to see the area. We will have a look around this time, mainly as we will have our dog with us.

Ladylunchalot · 26/09/2021 09:40

@ElephantOfRisk it's just so lovely here Smile, really don't want to come home tomorrow

WouldBeGood · 26/09/2021 10:40

Hetland Hall hotel is very nearby and looks really lovely now, all done up and they do good packages. It’s not in a town but handy for day trips north and south.
