I need to call a client. I'll ask her if I'm pronouncing it correctly, but I was hoping to get her name right-ish to start with. Can anyone help?

If Scottish is the same as Irish then the "dh" will be silent, so I'm going to guess its something like susie?

bunhead34 · 17/09/2021 12:11

This is a guess, but I would think like suzie?

CaddieDawg · 17/09/2021 12:13

I'd guess at Suzy too, as DH is Y in Gaelic

Unmute · 17/09/2021 12:13

That sounds right to me. I'll try that...

I think the 'idh' will be like ceilidh or Eilidh, so more like Su-say?

ditalini · 17/09/2021 12:20

The S will likely be a Sh sound, so Shoosy might be closer. Go with Susy and then ask her.

Groovee · 17/09/2021 12:58

Suzy. My friend spells hers like this.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 17/09/2021 12:59

Suzy!

shouldistop · 17/09/2021 14:43

Shoosha?

ditalini · 17/09/2021 15:04

@shouldistop

Shoosha?
I don't think so. The second s is before a broad vowel so it would be S not SH.
Branleuse · 17/09/2021 15:07

im not sure as im not familiar with many gaelic names, but I would put a guess on it being close to Susie

ditalini · 17/09/2021 15:19

I don't know much Gaelic, but the word for sugar is siucar (fada above the u but it just makes the sound a bit longer) which is pronounced more or less "shoocur" and the word for a jumper is geansaidh which is pronounced more or less "jensay". As

Gaelic is a very regular language that would make me think that Siusaidh would be pronounced Shoo-say, but with names all bets are off!

Unmute · 17/09/2021 16:15

Well I've only got through to voicemail so far. Her message said 'Hi this is Siusaidh' but the line was really bad so I'm still not sure how to say it. It definitely sounded like it had a 'sh' sound at the start

They vary a bit

You could google it, but you're likely to get a pronunciation that has an American accent on it. Plus, I remember Saoirse Ronan becoming famous and finding several people telling everyone how to say her name correctly - and they were all different. Quite likely her own accent will come into it - most of the options in this thread will get you close, just ask her if you've got it right first time you use her name.... even if you have cocked it up, you won't be the first.

Mantlemoose · 17/09/2021 16:28

Never heard of it but well done for trying to find out!

Picassosdove · 17/09/2021 16:40

Suzie

florafoxtrot · 17/09/2021 17:15

It is more like Shoo-say. There was a girl at school with that name!

LisaLane · 18/09/2021 03:49

It's the gaelicised spelling of Susie. No sh sound at all.

Lessstressedhemum · 18/09/2021 11:27

In Gaelic an I after s aspirates it so it becomes sh. So, siusaidh should be pronounced shoosy but lots of people use Gaelic spellings but not pronunciations, so it might just be Susie.
Sorry, I'm not helping.

LisaLane · 19/09/2021 13:59

It should really be spelt susaidh. The i after the s is a wrong spelling for the sound. It's still pronounced susie.

Unmute · 20/09/2021 12:13

I still haven't got through to her, but I've listened to her voicemail again on a better line and she's saying Hi this is Shees. But maybe that's a nickname for her actual name? I really want to talk to her now so I can get an answer to the pronunciation question (and the other questions I am actually trying to call her about).
