I looked on the b and q website but am confused so was wondering if anyone here has found a good place to buy them. We need 3 alarms for the house, a heat alarm for the kitchen and a carbon monoxide alarm for the boiler.

Any advice would be appreciated

We thought this was a scam when a leaflet came through the door last October!

ssd · 10/09/2021 18:33

Unfortunately not

This is yet another thing pissing me off. I appreciate there needs to be a standard given and applied for rental property. However, i own my own home, if i want to take the risk of it burning to the ground and/or I'm happy with my existing alarm arrangements, what the fuck has it got to do with the SG?

If you want to make it compulsory for new build, again deal with builders and crack on. Or provide funding for it for people in poverty or just make it a recommendation to go above one smoke on each floor or whatever.

mapleleavesreturn · 10/09/2021 18:57

Haven't we got til Feb 22? We had ours done and it was indeed IRO £250 (a bit more).

I've got until I sell my house.
Invisimamma · 10/09/2021 20:01

What if you can't afford to do this? I've got bog standard smoke alarms (not linked) and a carbon monoxide alarm. I don't have a spare £200-£250 between now and February to replace them. It's just not in my budget, that'd be another £20 a month I don't have.

I doubt most Scottish home owners even know about this.

I can see why it should be a requirement on all new builds and rentals but to ask everyone to fork out for these seems a bit much. I'm also very diligent about fire safety I am not trying to down play the importance of having good alarm systems.

mapleleavesreturn · 10/09/2021 20:03

I do think it's mad there's no money for the demand to put linked alarms into existing residences, surely scot gov know mom compliance will be high.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 10/09/2021 20:11

I'm not here to defend the SG, but they did delay the original deadline of Oct 2020, because there was an outcry about the short notice for the original deadline, and the potential costs.

I don't suppose the SG will be popping round the day after the deadline, to check you have fitted them.
If you rent, your LL needs to fit them. If you own and are selling up, you'll need to be honest on the home survey.

ElephantOfRisk · 10/09/2021 20:19

I thought the delay was another one pinned on Covid?

I also suspect that the fire brigade will no longer be fitting smoke alarms for free as they wont be able to afford to meet these requirements so it will leave vulnerable and poor people with even less options for safety.

I mean surely a couple of battery alarms fitted by the fire brigade (and I'm sure they will also come out and do a regular check if asked) is better than having nothing?

Who cares? I had to buy mine and my mums and the ones we have are only 2 years old!

www.safelincs.co.uk/scotland-2022-regulation-smoke-heat-co-carbon-monoxide-alarms/

These are the ones I purchased. I have 2 bed upstairs/downstairs house. I needed kitchen x 1 heat alarm, living room x 1 smoke alarm, downstairs hall x 1 smoke alarm, upstairs hall x 1 smoke alarm.

Mum has 2 bed flat on one level. She needed kitchen x 1 heat alarm, living room x 1 smoke alarm, hall x 1 smoke alarm.

Mantlemoose · 10/09/2021 20:26

Oh and don't forget your carbon monoxide detector although it doesn't need to be linked.

DontStepOnTheMomeRathz · 10/09/2021 20:26

We have the linked ones (new build) and I hate the fuckers. They’re insanely sensitive.

ElephantOfRisk · 10/09/2021 20:31

I have two wired ones that are linked and a stand alone CM detector.

I'm sure they won't be able to be added to so it will mean a complete change. I don't want a smoke alarm in my living room, we barely use it anyway and we all tend to scatter to different places in our house so not one main room that we occupy.

TheCanyon · 10/09/2021 20:36

We got a leaflet through for them all for £120, will see if I can dig it out of eh hasn't chucked it.

I'm quite excited to get new smoke alarms, ours are so old they're yellow, we moved here 8 years ago and never replaced them as they are absolutely fucking stuck to the ceiling. Dhs best friends a fireman who likes to randomly test them when he comes over Grin sonar least they work.

Wonder if there's any decent looking ones on the market now or are we all gonna have these ugly things all over our houses? A wee smoke alarm with built in mood lighting, get cracking designer folks...

DontStepOnTheMomeRathz · 10/09/2021 20:41

And presumably if you don’t have the right ones your house insurance won’t pay out if need be

I thought that but then it's only Scotland and not UK wide so if your insurance is through a national insurer, i'm not sure they will be that aware.
ElephantOfRisk · 10/09/2021 20:46

They would have to have a clause in the policy perhaps? An in reality, how common are house fires nowadays? I genuinely have no clue but I seem to remember a lot more happening in my youth.

user098683 · 10/09/2021 21:07

So the battery ones from the fire brigade are not good enough...even though its the fire brigade doing them?

It just doesn't make sense, we have a 1-bed tiny flat and we still need 4 different alarms even though its literally 12 steps from the front of the flat to the back!

I can't find any cheaper than £90 and I'll have to get ones for my parents too. I'm really confused when I look online whats ok and not.

IrisLilyRose · 10/09/2021 21:08

It seems a bit ott.

Farfalle88 · 10/09/2021 21:48

The quote we got was for £500!!

Invisimamma · 10/09/2021 21:54

No, the ones fitted by the fire brigade are not good enough. It is because they are not linked to one another. I have the ones from fire brigade in my house, but will need to replace these to meet the new requirement.

Yes, so people in private homes on low incomes will struggle to comply and the service provided by the fire brigade will no longer be available. Putting lives at risk.

Thinking of people such as folk who maybe bought a council house in the 80s etc who might be retired or living on low incomes just as an example.

Thanks for this, they're out of stock! I wonder if the politicians will be having them in their houses and who'll be paying for them!!
Aurea · 11/09/2021 07:58

I contacted my insurance company and they stated that it was not a requirement to have them installed in their Ts and Cs.

They are however required for your home report when you sell.
