Does anyone have any insight into how disruptive this is going to be in Glasgow? My employer is we may be advised not to go into the office in the city centre (not that we are at the moment) and we've s seen the Chinook helicopters in the last few weeks.

I think it'll be a bit of a nightmare.

What are the chinooks for? I saw them aswell.

I guess the helicopters are practicing for any security issues they may need to deal with? Lots of heads of state/high profile visitors plus protesters and activists expected.

have GCC not just started a consultation on alternative routes as footpaths/cycle paths will definitely be closed in the vicinity? am assuming there will be quite a bit of disruption...

It will probably depend on which area of the city you work.

Had it been confirmed where the heads of state are staying? This will have an impact. I would say if you can work from home then do that.

There will be a lot of activity around the SECC and the city chambers. But I have no idea where else

thedevilinablackdress · 02/09/2021 11:55

I've had a look on the event website ukcop26.org but there's not a lot there

DH has just been asked to pitch for an information animation about it, basically asking people to avoid going into Glasgow if they can avoid it for the duration.

The Chinooks were nothing to do with COP 26 - part of a larger NATO exercise which happens all the time but we generally don't see the aircraft as they're at sea.

Clydeside Expressway will be closed - both directions - Apart from that though I don't think there will be that much impact. Most things are at the SECC complex and the Science centre.

I applied for a volunteering role and got through to the final stages but then realised I couldn't be arsed with it really...

I've heard that all the roads surrounding the SECC are going to be closed to the public for the duration of the conference, and people are basically being advised to avoid the area. After seeing the disruption during the commonwealth games I can well imagine it will be a nightmare tbh. The knockon effects from shutting down the central routes will be enormous.

This looks like what I need, going to have a read around this

The busy areas will be around Central and Queen St stations, George Square , SECC and Science centre and the routes in between these like the Broomielaw and along the Clydeside.

But of course hotels will be full and therefore restaurants, bars and shops. Hopefully bringing lots of people and money into the city 😀
