Registering 14 year olds to vote

I have just had my electoral registration form and it says anyone 14 or over can register. Given that you can't vote until 16 at the minimum (council elections) and they won't put under 16s on the open register can anyone offer any suggestions as to why they want them registered?

So they're 'in the system' before they're 16.

If they only register 16 year olds, they don't have the right info if there's a sudden election. Starting earlier makes sure people don't miss out on their first chance to vote.

2 years early?

Will depend how often they do the general update of the register.
If a 14 yr old turns 15 in couple months time they could be eligible to vote before the next update.
Means they won't miss out

I've registered my ds. He will be 15 in October

It just makes the registration process more robust.

And am sure SNP hope this gets them thinking about politics and voting for them

It is standard in uk to start the process to be on the register a couple of years before you can vote so 16 (uk) or 14 (Scotland and wales). Not sure how it works in NI.

And am sure SNP hope this gets them thinking about politics and voting for them

Do you apply that same theory to England, wales, tory and labour? 🙄

Aye , it’s 18 in England before you can vote . They aren’t as desperate as SNP .
