School pupils self isolating

Does anyone have a clear understanding of the need to self isolate? DS17 has a close friend at school that has tested positive. They are in classes together (sports class so no masks and in close contact), have lunch together etc. DS has not been contacted by track and trace or school. The guidance now looks like that doesn't mean he has to isolate, it mentions sharing households I think. They haven't had sleepovers or anything. He has taken a pcr because he has been in contact with a few positive cases and we are supposed to be seeing grandparents. Pcr results not back. Can anyone shed light on whether he should be at school tomorrow given he is waiting for a (voluntary) pcr?

You isolate until you get a negative pcr whether it’s voluntary or not or what’s the point in taking it.
My boyfriend and I are both positive. My 2 older sons negative one is double vaccinated and other is 16 so both back to school and work tomorrow according to guidelines however 16 year old gets lift to school from me as no other way to get there so no idea what will happen as I can’t do that nor would he want to be in car with me as he’s treating me like I’ve got the plague.

My younger 2 are with their dad both also negative so back to school too. Our pcr took 24 hours so hopefully it’ll be back soon for you.

My understanding (and I was contact traced through school this week) following the instructions on the text I received from Public Health was that I isolated until I had a negative PCR. The results for all involved, different testing venues, were back in less than 24 hours. This is the advice for under 18s and double vaccinated adults.

Also, schools are no longer responsible for carrying out contact tracing. Public Health will contact the positive case (or their parents if a younger child) and ask them to identify who close contacts are.

Thanks. I get all that. I can't get my head around the fact that both my DC have previously had periods of isolating when the positive case was extremely distant and no real risk but now it can be your best mate and track and trace don't want to know because you've not had a sleepover. He won't go back to school until he's had a negative result but mad that he only took the test to be extra cautious and he could be in with God knows what tomorrow if he hadn't.

The exposure he has had is unlikely to be classified as a 'contact' for a pupil in Scotland under new rules. Unless notified by test and protect he can go into school. Whether he chooses to take a LFT or PCR is separate from that. As you say they are looking for household and overnight or very close sustained physical ie girlfriend/boyfriend

I know it is such a huge change from before . From so extreme to very minimal Confused time will tell.

This was what test and protect said in the text they sent me this week.

So as long as his PCR comes back negative he can return to school.

We've been isolating for ages as 4/5 of us tested positive. DD keeps getting 'inconclusive' pcrs and I'm not sending her back until she's negative. I know most people are double vaxxed but DH and I are too, and he especially has been quite unwell, and he's never ill!
So I'm not sure what you should do!

Sarcobaleno · 22/08/2021 13:57

@weebarra that sounds grim. You're right not to send your daughter back but how frustrating. Hope you're all ok

I'd most likely keep her home.

My colleague is double vaccinated but still tested positive this week.

There is an outbreak in my DS’s class. We were told no need to self-isolate.
I got him a PCR anyway as I wanted to be on the safe side (negative) and kept him home while we waited for that, he had also had two negative LFTs since.
There were six children in the class on Friday, they spent their time on the computers and doing very little work.
I am just keeping going with the LFTs, not sure what else to do.

We had a case last week in my youngest’s class. The letter said classmates are no longer considered to be close contacts so don’t need to isolate or get PCRs unless contacted by test and protect - household, overnights and close contact, e.g. kissing seem to be the only close contacts for under 18s now.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 28/08/2021 14:58

I got four emails from school to say my child was in a class with a positive case…. And to do nothing unless test and protect get in touch. Which with the new rules they won’t as there’s not been sleepovers etc. But we know who two of the cases are and my child sits next to them for a number of hours each day - so we went for PCR yesterday- came back negative thank fully. It’s so bizarre going from sending everyone home en masse last term to nobody this term- really feel for the schools having to try and cope with latest madness!

Pootle40 · 28/08/2021 22:39

Unless he has symptoms or was contacted by tack and trace there is no requirement to do anything.

Haudyourwheesht · 29/08/2021 07:48

I think every child detailed on this thread as having been a close contact and taken a PCR was negative. Maybe that's why they're not insisting on them.
