Where is the cleanest, purest air in Scotland?

My asthma has got a bit worse with age and thinking ahead to retirement, I may move to somewhere with as clean air as possible.
I have looked online but can’t seem to get a definite answer.
I thought you folks would have a better idea and personal experience?
Thanks in advance🙏

You're going to need more parameters.

Budget?
Do you need to be in a town? A village with a shop? Can you go completely solo rural?
Planning for public transport needs - bus, trains?

Unst?

I always thought that a bit of altitude helped but no idea if that's good for asthma. Is damp or dry air better? Probably looking more rural but also need to watch out for certain crops or fertilisers?

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 13:49

HerName... probably a village or town and yes some sort of transport although I do drive.

You also need to think about distance to medical attention if you have an attack.

ElephantOfRisk · 03/08/2021 13:53

What type of environment do you live in at the moment OP?

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 13:55

City environment at the moment....
Definitely dry air helps me!

I think i'd maybe be looking for somewhere east coastish, Somewhere nearish the Borders General which is Melrose? Or maybe Tayside and up the coast towards Aberdeen. Or Aviemore?

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 13:58

Elephant... thanks! I did actually think of Aviemore or surrounding areas. I’ve been there a couple of times and it was lovely

Tayside / East coast is good and has Ninewells, a very good hospital

ElephantOfRisk · 03/08/2021 14:02

It is a lovely area. and there is a fairly decent fast road to the main hospital in Inverness but I think they do have decent local facilities (family used to live there). It has altitude and dry air and not really so much farming. It does have lots of trees though so if you are affected by tree pollen it would be a consideration. On the train and bus line for travel and has a reasonable sized Tesco and some places to go eat and drink. You obviously will have cold winters and might be stuck in if you aren't happy driving in snow.

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 14:20

Elephant... thanks... I think it’s definitely the area I’m leaning to most👍

I think it's gotten more relatively expensive since they have more facilities, used to just have a small co-op and a corner shop further up the village and this was in the days before deliveries so food shopping used to mean making do or going into Inverness.

I don't know Tayside well but Borders areas are lovely too and tend to be cheaper apart from Peebles.

We had this conversation a few years ago after noticing a massive improvement in DS while in aviemore. Granton on spey has a medical centre for nebulisers if ever required.

Fundays12 · 03/08/2021 15:00

Highland air is pretty clean generally. I live in Inverness and my asthma doesnt bother me though it does in bigger cities.

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 15:40

Dismantle... thanks so much👌
Fundays12... yes, Inverness shire might be a good shout. I’ll start having a look at Rightmove to get an idea. It would be a 2 bedroom flat I’d be looking for.

Just watch of pollen bothers you as some of the out lying areas have a lot of oil seed rape at certain times of the year.

birchtree23 · 03/08/2021 17:18

Look up Moray. We have lovely coastal towns around Buckie. Cullen, Portknockie, Findochty. Portsoy. Have a wee look 😃

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 17:34

Fundays ... yes tree pollen bothers me a lot!
I wonder if Moray would be more suitable than Aviemore then🤔
birchtree23... I’ll have a look. I wonder if tree pollen situation is better in Moray? I’ll need to google nearest hospital too, thanks!

BreezoMeter website gives you the air quality and pollen for the whole country. Aviemore has a large Tesco, a health centre, Premier Inn and an Aldi now.

Summertime1875 · 03/08/2021 18:17

Never heard of Breezometer- thanks, that helps too!

Aviemore may not be great for you then. Costal towns might be better.

StarryEyeSurprise · 04/08/2021 11:00

Aviemore High Street is very busy with traffic so I wouldn't say it has the cleanest air. If you want really clean air you want to go up to Caithness. It has a decent hospital but you may need to travel for major ops.

Branleuse · 04/08/2021 11:22

what about one of the islands
