Restaurant Taster Menus - recommendations.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

My gran has given DH and I money for a night away and I think we’d like to book a restaurant with a taster menu as something completely different. Usually we are with the kids so meals out usually factor in a burger or fish and chips.

I’ve seen Dean Banks at the Cale in Edinburgh and there is Six by Nico but I wonder if anyone has any other recommendations. We are based centrally so can travel a bit.

No1 at The Balmoral do a tasting menu once a month (I think) we splashed out and did the paired wines which was good value for money and really added to the experience.

LizzieMacQueen · 31/07/2021 13:09

Have a look at the Witchery too. They have a paired hotel, the name escapes me, we stayed at and had a fabulous dinner.

BeaBeaBuzz · 31/07/2021 13:25

The Witcher restaurant is beautiful but food really disappointing. Shame as rooms are gorgeous. Rhubarb at prestonfield is the sister restaurant which I think PP means above- food there is a million times better.

Tasting menus- balmoral, aizle, the table

I’m boycotting kitchin group.

Just generally awesome food- the grainstore hands down

Wriggleon · 31/07/2021 13:27

Would have previously recommended Kitchin but boycotting too. Interested in suggestions, was not overly impressed with the witchery

LizzieMacQueen · 31/07/2021 13:55

Yes @BeaBeaBuzz, the Prestonfield. We stayed as a DB&B thing, it was also a gift, and the food was amazing. (Caveat, I may be easy to please!)

celtiethree · 31/07/2021 14:00

Cail Bruich in Glasgow.

Chemenger · 01/08/2021 08:30

The Peat Inn. The food is wonderful and the rooms are lovely too. It’s near St Andrews and the East Neuk coast for things to do.

Cismyfatarse · 01/08/2021 10:31

The Newport. Master Chef the Professionals winner. Very good value, amazing views of the Tay and lovely rooms attached.

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/08/2021 14:19

I’d echo The Peat Inn, one of the nicest meals I’ve had and paired wines were perfect.

Haudyourwheesht · 03/08/2021 14:29

Cail Bruich probably a good shout - they've just got their Michelin star so will not have become complacent.

Why are folk boycotting the Kitchin? I like a good boycott. (West, Brewdog and Six by Nico need a bit of company.)

LizzieMacQueen · 03/08/2021 15:42

Is it the bullying claims perhaps?

BeaBeaBuzz · 03/08/2021 15:58

Bullying claims, sexual harassment, stealing tips & total non apology

Gutted as scran & scallie and the kitchin were among our favourites but there are too many great places to eat in Edinburgh to give them any custom now

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/08/2021 16:19

Dd recently went to 21212 and loved it, my friend and I are going to Martin Wishart next month.
Both new to us as we'd booked The Kitchin and are also boycotting.

ElephantOfRisk · 03/08/2021 16:46

I like a good boycott. Add Nestle and Graham's Dairy to the list.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/08/2021 17:13

I know about the others, but what have Six by Nico and Graham's done?

NoYOUbekind · 03/08/2021 17:20

I'm hearing good things about the Caley. Aizle is fab but I don't love their new space. Fhior in Edinburgh is amazing, Timberyard is good too.

But if I was looking to spoil myself I'd probably do the Peat Inn and just stay there. And if I could manage travel time, Inver.

Badgertadger · 03/08/2021 17:29

Aizle food is incredible - haven't been to their place in Charlotte square yet but they were a huge lockdown favourite. No 1 at Balmoral is great (although they're being less adventurous under Covid). Have heard wonderful things about Mark Greenaway - think he's at the caley now.

I've been trying and failing to get a table at the little chart room for two years now.

Witchery was very very disappointing last time I was there. I don't do Kitchin (not boycott though I would now, just never really felt it was worth the £). 21212 was an experience but food wasn't that memorable.

BeaBeaBuzz · 03/08/2021 17:31

Oooh what’ve Graham’s done? Sorry OP… derailing into a boycott thread

The food is great at Mark Greenaway's @Badgertadger but I can't get along with the space. It's such a barn of a place. First time I was there I was placed in-between two two-tops of hotel guests who did not know each other, but came from the same state and enjoyed getting to know each other over the top of my table (!) and second time it was dead.
AnneShirleysNewDress · 03/08/2021 17:37

The Peat Inn if you fancy a trip to Fife.

weebarra · 03/08/2021 17:42

Peat Inn or Three Chimneys if you can manage a trip away. Aizle, Rhubarb or The Walnut if in town.

Badgertadger · 03/08/2021 17:44

@NoYOUbekind it's always a risk with fancy hotels - soulless dining rooms that don't quite please anyone.

ghettihead · 03/08/2021 17:45

Aurora, not so expensive but fantastic food. They may also have a table free in the next six months unlike a lot of the other places mentioned.

MrsR87 · 03/08/2021 17:47

Salt in Stratford upon Avon.
