Where to live to commute to cross house hospital...?

Nhsquestion1 · 21/07/2021 11:05

Hello, I’m hoping to get a job at crosshouse hospital, will need to relocate with DP and baby. DP will hopefully find work in Glasgow. Can anyone recommend some places we should look to live? Have heard people talk about ‘Southside’ or ‘west end’ of Glasgow, but where exactly is nice? Just need a few ideas to get me started! Ideally we would buy a 3 bed with a garden somewhere that is within ok commuting distance for me and DP, but probably will start by renting and it will depend what we can afford. Anyone got any ideas? I’m from the east coast but living down south at the moment and have no clue about Glasgow!

Bridge of Weir and Houston probably wrong side for Cross House as you would be competing with some of city centre traffic flow or go through Paisley which can be a bottleneck in the morning. Stewart on is nice though with good amenities.

In your situation I’d rent somewhere in Glasgow south side or east ren near a railway station for your husband to get into the city quickly.

Take some time to get to know the area and decide what you want to do.

North Ayrshire - nearer your work , lovely countryside and coast, more house for your money, longer commute for your DH

South side of Glasgow / Shawlands - mostly flats, more expensive properties, cool vibe. Very short journey into town for your DH, longer for you.

East Ren - varied. Rural village like Eaglesham , huge suburbs like Newton means ( you will be very car dependent there ). Clarkston and giffnock have more older ( Victorian ) properties and lots of houses. Both have local high streets and good buses and trains into Town. Quick trip for you down the m77 to work. Best state schools in Scotland.

@Nhsquestion1 no offence taken 😂 we actually lived down south for 16 years and moved back in 2019.
We were hesitant re Kilmarnock at first but its been absolutely fine, if we move again I'd like to remain in ayrshire for all the reasons I mentioned earlier.
Re the London commute, it's not proved any more difficult for my husband than getting trains in and out London from where we were, he goes down early on a mon/Tues and comes back on a thurs/Fri, it works really well for us.
Just shout if you need any info 😊

BTW it’s easier to rent here . No fees - they are all paid by the landlord. All deposits protected and held by a third party. Standard tenancy agreements, short notice periods, all landlords have to be registered .

But you will need good references, credit checks, employers ref and bank statements.

Rents don’t usually include bills and they never include council tax.

You’ll pay at least £1000 to rent a small house on the south side of Glasgow in a decent area

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/109880417#/?channel=RES_LET

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110656349#/?channel=RES_LET

At least £800- 900 for an ok 2 bed flat in Shawlands

They go VERY quickly though. So you need to work out how you are going to do viewings when you are 400 miles away.

0DETTE · 21/07/2021 17:59

For example, this came on the market yesterday and viewings are now fully booked ( 2 bed flat Shawlands )

Part of converted house in very nice street in cambuslang ( Glasgow south side , not as trendy as Shawlands and not as near the M77 but good value )

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110162612#/?channel=RES_LET

Clarkston ( suburban but good transport and schools , not as snobby as Newton Mearns ) . Decor a bit tired but plenty space and garden

Pollokshields, Shawlands, Strathbungo, Newlands are all possibilities on the south side of Glasgow. They're mostly leafy suburbs (especially West Pollokshields, some parts of Shawlands, and most of Newlands and Strathbungo).

I'm in West Pollokshields and my neighbour is a consultant who commutes to Crosshouse (not in a specialty that usually requires urgent on-call). When we lived in Shawlands, I commuted both to the south side of Ayr and (for a later job) to Kilmarnock. But as a PP has said, it's easier in the other direction.

Have a look at conversions: I'm not sure about the rental market but you might be able to find something in your budget with a garden/access to garden. We're in an 3/4 bed, 2 reception rooms, dining kitchen upper conversion (half of a large Victorian villa) and have a lovely large garden (back garden split left and right, front garden technically communal). I'll not tell you how much we paid for it 22 years ago as you'd cry Grin

A friend bought a similar, but slightly smaller house along the road, with the garden split slightly differently (he has the back half of the back garden plus a strip up the side for access, plus a small area at the front): 2 reception rooms, 2 bedrooms, kitchen & bathroom. About 6 years ago it cost him, iirc, £300 or £330k.

Looking further ahead for your family, Glendale Primary is very good. Shawlands Academy is also very good - but not all of Pollokshields is in its catchment. We had to do a placing request for ds to go there. At the time most/all placing requests were accepted but I think that's changed now. (Ds is now at Aberdeen Uni Smile).

The new A737 bypass would take you right to Kilwinning in about 15 mins if you go in opposite direction to city centre traffic. Could be in Kilmarnock in 30 mins easily. Also could cut through Stewarton for scenic route!

Hadn't thought about going that way, that would make a lot of sense and going against the traffic both ways.

RunnerDown · 21/07/2021 21:34

The south side of Glasgow is very nice. Personally I would stay there rather than Troon . I definitely wouldn’t live in Kilmarnock .
Eaglesham is a nice village www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110413352#/?channel=RES_BUY
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110589866#/?channel=RES_BUY
And places will sell for 10-20% above asking price

imstilljenny2 · 22/07/2021 15:19

If you are looking for village life Dunlop is lovely. Good primary school and lovely village feel to it. Great train line to Glasgow which takes 20mins. About a 15 min drive to Crosshouse.
All the other suggestions are good too.

BingBongToTheMoon · 22/07/2021 15:25

I’d definitely go Ayrshire rather than Glasgow.

Nhsquestion1 · 22/07/2021 15:33

Thanks again everyone - thank you for all these really helpful and practical suggestions!

RJnomore1 · 22/07/2021 18:52

Just to help hopefully - for coastal ayrshire at the moment, look at the home report price and add on 15%. Loads of folk selling up from Glasgow and moving here with cash from the sale, no concern about negative equity, and certainty they’ll only be going to the office a couple of days a week when things get back to normal. One estate agent alone has a waiting list of over 100 for prestwick properties.

So don’t go by the Rightmove price when you’re thinking how much you will need to pay.

Iggii · 22/07/2021 20:12

There are some lovely streets of houses in Kilmarnock, and a few really nice parks. You would get a lot more for your money there, but a worse commute for your dh. With a dc, which of you will do drop offs etc or be able to drop everything if the school calls? Because that person, whichever one it is, shouldn't have the longest commute!

shouldistop · 24/07/2021 08:06

Troon. There's a straight train to Glasgow.

prettybird · 24/07/2021 08:14

@shouldistop

Troon. There's a straight train to Glasgow.
Not at the moment Wink No useable station to stop at Sad

At least trains are running on the line again though Smile even if they aren't stopping at Troon.

shouldistop · 24/07/2021 08:20

@prettybird I know, I'm sure it will be sorted before op moves though.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 25/07/2021 14:31

My favs would be: Troon or Dunlop for Ayrshire . Newlands, Giffnock and Netherlee for Glasgow south side :)

Redtartanshoes · 25/07/2021 21:40

Troon today 😍
