Holiday tips for Glasgow(ish)

We've booked a holiday home in the Clyde Valley about 40mins south of Glasgow, and after a brief panic when Nicola S was threatening to turn back Mancunians at the border, we are very excited. I'm after any tips for things to do. We have two DC, 14 and 10. The 14yo and I like art, the younger one likes a walk with a view, and both kids like slightly quirky shopping (kawaii/anime/sci fi stuff). We all like the seaside, and eating lots, so restaurant recommendations will be particularly welcome.

I've already booked Kelvingrove to come and see Big Jesus, and brunch for that day, but otherwise we have a week to fill. Thanks in advance, Scotsnetters Smile.

Don’t forget your mask OP as still required in Scotland . Have a great time

Can I just say thanks again to every poster on the thread? I am even more excited to visit now. I definitely plan to see some Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and the kids will love Sharmanka. DC2 said out of nowhere that she wants to see Greyfriars Bobby (didn't know she'd heard of him) so I think we will day trip Edinburgh as well. And H says thank you for the bubble tea recommendation.

Can I just check, level zero means booking is no longer mandatory for restaurants? Is it still advisable to book? We have two reservations already, but I rather hoped to be more flexible, especially as we'll need reservations for a few attractions.

No, you don’t have to book but if there’s somewhere specific that you want to go to, I would. The distancing obviously means there are fewer tables.
Enjoy!

Great, thanks!

@Blueberrycreampie

If time permits, The Burrell Collection in Pollok Park is worth a visit. The park is lovely, the building, which was designed specifically to house the collection is super, and they also have a great cafe👍. It's in the south side of Glasgow and easy to get to!
The Burrell Collection is currently closed as the building is having major renovations. Pollok park is still open.

I would say if you are wanting to go for dinner in Lanark at either prego or the inn on the loch then booking is probably necessary. If you are in Lanark at lunch time then there is an open seating area for picnics next to the church in the town centre.

@Cornwallnewbie Oh that's a shame, was hoping to visit later this year!

Don't think I've seen anyone mention the Clyde Valley Family park yet in Crossford. Lots of activities for all the family and they have go karts and mini golf for older kids

If the weather stays nice the outdoor pools at new Cumnock and Gourock are fab- need to book though. Pinkston water sports in Glasgow has fun tubing sessions. Jupiter art land is brilliant. Have a fab time!

Cumbrae island is lovely - has a lovely old fashioned seaside town and beautiful beaches around the island. Queues for ferry are only if taking car. We normally park in Largs and walk straight on the ferry, take bus to Millport to hire bikes and cycle round Island. Very flat and easy cycle. Not much traffic so a lovely cycle round. Largs is lovely too - climb Castle Hill for a fantastic view then a walk along the prom and ice cream at Nardinis.

Am bookmarking! I live nearby ish and have totally run out of things to do with teens. And never quite have the energy to just traipse round Glasgow. This is Great! Thank you very much all! And thanks op for posting!

I just wanted to say thanks again for all of your tips. We had a ball!

We didn't do or see half of the things I thought we might, as we had a few days just relaxing in our amazing holiday castle and grounds. But we ate our way down Byres Road and Great Western Road - so much good food and drink. The DC dragged me up Ben Lomond, which I can still feel in my calves, and we did some more walks around the Clyde Valley including the Falls. We loved touring the bookshops of both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Mother India was so fab I bought the cook book. Kelvingrove was brilliant and I am now in love with the Scottish Colourists. Everyone made us feel so welcome and I can't wait to come back to see and do more.

Can I ask what the hotel was? We desperately need a break and I need a recommendation!
