Coldstream holiday, recommendations?

Hello,

We are very excited to be visiting Coldstream end of August for 6 nights! We haven't been away for a good couple of years. We managed to nab a lovely little place that had just come up for holiday let (after being priced out of anything else!)
Will be DP, myself and my son (7)

My son loves history, nature, wildlife, night skies, fish & fishing (We don't know how to fish, but would love for him to have proper experience of it - he sadly watches YouTube videos of people fishing!)

We went to berwick on tweed, a few years ago and went on a boat trip to try and spot wildlife- only saw a few seals but still thought it was magical.

Any "great outdoor" ideas would be so appreciated. We don't mind travelling a while into Scotland etc, to get the experiences we would like.
I never actually been to Scotland properly and I have always wanted to visit, so happy to travel around.

Very excited but we have no idea where to start with finding things to do, so thought I would ask for inspiration here.. we were also thinking we might need to start booking out the activities now, incase of demand.

Thanks in advance :)

Indeed. You can find it on Facebook I think, it's arranged in boxes

If your Son is into bikes or scooters, there is a good pump track in Hawick. The play park is also nice there and would be good for a 7 year old. Harestanes, near Jedburgh is good for that age as well.

Kelso garden centre food is great - might seem a little pricey looking at the menu but is worth it! Lilliardsedge caravan site - not too far from Harestanes - has a new restaurant which also looks great.

There's lots to do near here. Can't go wrong with Spittal or Bamburgh beaches either though Eyemouth may appeal more if your Son is into fishing (there's a cracking ice cream shop there!)

I think there are seal watching trips near Eyemouth too - we saw a seal at the harbour last time we went and you can buy feed for them. Something a wee bit different!

Oh wow, thank you so much to everyone who has replied so far, I honestly want to do it all, the suggestions are just perfect (and cementing my love for all things scotland)
To PP who mentioned a little military museum too, great suggestion. DP is ex forces and my son loves learning about history and army related things.

Each suggestion has just been brilliant. I shall use this thread whilst on holiday to fill our days, looks like we will be doing a return visit already Grin

I have emailed Kailzie Fishery also, as it just looks perfect for us newbies!

Thank you all for the overwhelming responses and knowledge! I'm full of excited anticipation now!

Please feel free to continue adding any further ideas! :)

If you military and history you must visit Edinburgh castle!!

ElephantOfRisk · 15/07/2021 19:53

There is also the museum of flight:

www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-flight/

Which has a military aviation hanger (might depend which area of forces your DH was in)

For ancient history, there's Maelmin www.maelmin.org.uk/ and the Duddo Stones www.stone-circles.org.uk/stone/duddo.htm

There's also a small military museum (Northumberland Fusiliers) at Alnwick castle, but it's very small and crowded, so may not be open.

Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick is good, and you can do bird/wildlife watching boat trips from there too (and get fish and chips on the beach!)

Thank you all for the information so far.

We have planned a trip to the fishing pools, and have booked a trip out on the RIB because of your suggestions.

After trawling the Internet for hours last night I've come to realise the best wildlife would be further into Scotland, and all the other wildlife trips seem to be 4 hours + away from where we are based. So next time I shall be booking somewhere to stay further into Scotland.

I've loved all the suggestions and I'm still looking into them to have our days planned.

Any more suggestions will be happily received.

I really want to make this special and memorable for my son!

If you are going to Eyemouth, I would also recommend popping along to St Abbs. It was used as New Asgard in Avengers Endgame. You can see the village very quickly, but it has a great cliff top walk at St Abb’s Head. If you go, park in the National Trust Car Park which is a bit before the village and walk down (parking limited in the town and narrow roads make it difficult to negotiate turning round). Parking is £3 cash in the NT car park.
