moving to Scotland from UK

Hi, we are planning to move to Scotland within next 6 months with family. I am looking for areas within 15-20 miles from Edinburgh that have affordable housing, good schools and a mixture of diverse community. Any suggestions and recommendations?

Erm... do you mean England when you wrote the "UK"? That's not going to go down well...

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 01/07/2021 14:45

Uh-oh.
Scotland is in the UK 🤣🤣

ImperfectTents · 01/07/2021 14:46

Define affordable and expectations. Eg 200k 3 bed flat or 1 million detached

ImperfectTents · 01/07/2021 14:47

Maybe ask mumsnet to edit the title

Chemenger · 01/07/2021 14:47

I would honestly ask MN to delete this and start again without the huge mistake in the title. When you do move here learn the names of the countries that make up the UK and how to refer to them.

massiveportion · 01/07/2021 14:48

Maybe OP is also time travelling from a future where Scotland have left the UK...

Californiabakes · 01/07/2021 14:48

What do you consider as affordable housing? You’ll struggle to find a diverse community outside Edinburgh/Glasgow. Lots of nice places within 20 miles of Edinburgh

latissimusdorsi · 01/07/2021 14:57

Yes need to define affordable. Do you need to commute to Edinburgh?
As pp said Scotland not very diverse out with Glasgow and Edinburgh ( but Edinburgh not particularly diverse)

latissimusdorsi · 01/07/2021 14:59

And yes Scotland is part of the UKHmm

Scarify · 01/07/2021 15:02

And we wonder why we have a reputation for the massive chip in our collective shoulder Grin bunch of meanies.

Do you think the OP is going to come back to this thread? (Let alone move here- maybe that's the intention??)

Anamz · 01/07/2021 15:04

Sorry for the mistake, I know Scotland is part of UK , it was an error. Well I would say around 200k , 3 bed house. I wanted it to be within a commutable distance as daughter will start uni in 3 years time so you can say its a sort of long term planning.

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2021 15:07

Do you mean your Dd wants to go to Uni in Edinburgh and wants to live at home?
Sorry if I've misunderstood.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2021 15:08

I was going to ignore the UK thing as we really are v helpful but that was quite a clanger, and I say that as an English person!

Chemenger · 01/07/2021 15:14

Look on the ESPC website, most property in and around Edinburgh is advertised on there. Its pretty easy to search by property type and location on there.

How do you know your DD will still want to go to Edinburgh uni in 3 years time or even that she will get in to her chosen course? That seems like a very odd reason for moving.
DragonDoor · 01/07/2021 15:20

I’d go for Glasgow over Edinburgh for diversity and affordability.

Tbh, I think that to plan where you live based on your daughters uni commute is a bit unusual. Up to an hr away is a travelling distance.

In 3 years time your daughter will meet the residency requirements for free tuition and student loans. She could want a flat share or to stay in student halls. She might not even want to study in Edinburgh.

latissimusdorsi · 01/07/2021 15:22

Agree look at espc.

Remember Edinburgh is capital city with prices to match so for that budget you'll need to go quite far out.
Look in West Lothian Livingston, Broxburn, Bathgate. Or Polmont, Falkirk.
Or Fife Dunfermline, Burntisland, Kirkcaldy. all easy into Edinburgh by train.
I wouldn't really class any of these as diverse though

latissimusdorsi · 01/07/2021 15:28

If you go for West Lothian or Falkirk area your DD could travel to Uni in Edinburgh or Glasgow by train

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/07/2021 15:32

Falkirk isn't too bad for diversity and has nice community groups.

GlencoraP · 01/07/2021 15:32

I think the OP is moving to Scotland to take advantage of the ‘free’ university education.

I wonder if that's the reason OP wants to move

Lots of things free here in Scotland, we get bribes/gifted from the ScotGov. It won’t be that way if Scotland leaves the U.K. (just like the OP is planning to doConfused) I’d be factoring that into any planned move specifically for uni places...

Scarify · 01/07/2021 15:37

Harder to get into a Scottish uni as a resident Scot.

Anamz · 01/07/2021 15:39

Wow I am amazed to see how majority of people respond to my query.
Cant believe how people lost the tendency to respect others. I asked for recommendation not for being judgemental. I could plan, prepare and make my move for any reason and I know what my daughter wants and has planned for her future. Thanks to all those who actually tried to help.
