We're moving to Auchterarder next month. We've had a few awful years of bereavements, so we're looking forward to a lovely fresh start. DD and her family will be just an hour away, which will be great.

Really excited, but as we're moving from NE England, not really sure what to expect. Looking forward to embracing our new life though. Anyone got thoughts for things we might particularly enjoy exploring in our first few months?

I love Perthshire, such a beautiful part of the country! Aberfeldy is nice place, there is the Watermill bookshop/cafe and a good bakery too. Slightly further afield you could explore Falkland, Loch Leven and the East Neuk of Fife. And in Dundee there is the V&A, Dundee Contemporary Arts and a few interesting museums if that's your thing.
Good luck with the move and I hope you soon find some favourite local haunts!

ElephantOfRisk · 25/06/2021 14:35

Lots to enjoy in the area, what types of things do you like to do?

Stirling is also pretty close and it's not far to drive to anywhere with good walks and scenery, depends on whether you want hills or water or flat.

The David Stirling memorial is worth looking at when out for a drive.

Auchterarder is really very central for seeing a fair bit of Scotland.

This might help:

www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/index.html

You can click on the areas of the map and it will show you some places that might be interesting to visit.

TheRosesOfSuccess · 25/06/2021 15:05

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. We love lochs, the hills, countryside and nice small towns. Plus good food and cake (that's very important!). The weather and transport links won out over moving to the west coast, much as we love it over there.

latissimusdorsi · 25/06/2021 15:13

Loch Tay, Loch rannoch, Loch Tummel
Dunked, Pitlochry, Kenmore

Elisebev · 25/06/2021 20:40

Feel free to message me. We have a flat in auchterarder and spend most weekends there. It’s a lovely area

Bloodypunkrockers · 26/06/2021 13:14

I'd love to live there too

I can't afford to though

Lovely cafes and restaurants. Some great wee quirky shops

It's really central

I'm laughing at the poster suggesting Aberfeldy as a local place to visit. It's quicker and easier to get to Glasgow city centre than it is to visit Highland Perthshire

AlphabetAerobics · 26/06/2021 14:07

Cafe Mimi's in the High Street if it's cakes you're after!

The other side of the A9 by Duchally is good for spotting pine-martens.

Gleneagles good for spotting footballers.

Great walking around Crieff - park up at the Crieff Hydro, walk up to the Knock (views to die for) - up to the golf course for bacon rolls and back to the Winter Garden at the Hotel for (more) cakes.

Roman fort at Braco.

Fab walks from the Glendevon road up on to the hills - take your binoculars for potential Ospreys and if you're very, very lucky - a Golden Eagle.

Strawberry picking in Dunning at Broadslap Farm - also have terrific cakes.

Farm shop at Gloagburn. Umm... also nice cakes. Blush

All within 10 miles of Auchterarder.

randomsabreuse · 26/06/2021 14:12

Bit further afield but the cake at Rannoch Station tea shop is amazing. Need to go back for more sometime (I'm Glasgow area so it's a fair way but would definitely be worth it!

TheRosesOfSuccess · 26/06/2021 20:20

Thank you so much everyone, it's really appreciated. Looks like we won't be lacking on the cake front Grin DH especially is very pleased about that! Lots of great ideas for things to do. We love the countryside and wildlife, so we're hoping this move will suit us perfectly.

And @Elisebev thank you, I'll definitely message you nearer our move.

I've posted a few times in the past on Scotsnet about where to live (with previous names), and I have to say it's been one is the friendliest and most helpful parts of MN.

There's also an amazing charity shop, if you like that sort of thing

You've obviously managed to avoid the threads where we are all fighting over politics! Grin

I think you'll be spoiled for choice for places to go and things to see and you'll find your own vibe in terms of what you enjoy, you'll soon be on here recommending walks and activities and cake shops/cafes.

I hope you settle in well and enjoy the area, north central scotland has a lot to offer as well as easy access to the big and small cities and the highlands.

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2021 20:30

Dunblane has an M&S food if you are after food and cake and it isn't that far away.

ParishSpinster · 19/07/2021 11:00

Comrie Croft - it's good for mountain biking BUT also lovely walks and cracking views from the top trail. Reward is good coffee and cakes at the cafe at the bottom.

Comrie also has a good bakery. You can travel to Comrie via Crieff (Comrie Croft will be on your right hand side). The Deil's Cauldron is in/near Comrie.

Then Auchengarrich animal farm is beyond Comrie, lovely wee place with nice cafe and walk. You can look back to Auchterarder via Braco road that takes you to Gleneagles. The countryside and views on that road are beautiful.

Between Crieff and Auchterarder there is the Innerpeffray Library, restored and has cafe. Also v small info trail (like 5 minutes, but interesting!) and lots of info on Romans.

There are Roman signalling stations Too, dotted about.

Gleneagles train station is a good link to Dundee, Perth, Glasgow, Stirling, Edinburgh. Also on the sleeper train route to Inverness and London.

Sarcobaleno · 19/07/2021 11:25

Head up via Perth and Blairgowrie to Ballater and Braemar. Both lovely towns with gorgeous walking in the area. Head to Balmaha for walks along Loch Lomond. If you like hills Ben A'an gives stunning views for the effort. East Neuk of Fife is gorgeous too. Auchterarder is very well placed for going all directions so good choice! Welcome to Scotland, hope you are very happy in your new home.

It’s an hour’s drive from Aucherarder to Aberfeldy And exactly the same from Auchterarder to Glasgow city centre.

There’s more likely to be traffic going south.

Bloodypunkrockers · 23/07/2021 12:09

Odette. Not going to argue as I don't know where you stay or how you drive

I'm quite relaxed about the fact that it takes me 45
mins on A and M roads to get from Auchterarder to the centre of Glasgow versus over an hour to Aberfeldy via the A9 then twisty narrow roads from Logierait

My point is that Perthshire covers a huge geographical area and it is quicker and easier (and nearer) the central belt from Auchterarder than some of the suggestions

0DETTE · 23/07/2021 18:45

@Bloodypunkrockers where I stay or how I drive isn’t really relevant.

I drive from Auchterarder to Aberfeldy via Gilmerton and Amulree. But going via Logierait isn’t that much slower.

Anyway, Google maps agrees with me that all three journeys take a similar time. So I don’t think it’s fair to mock other posters who made a polite suggestion of a perfectly reasonable day out on the basis of the disparity in journey times.

Usually these are courteous threads where people politely share ideas. No need to mock others for their lack of knowledge -especially when you are wrong .

Bloodypunkrockers · 23/07/2021 19:03

Grin. Yes I expect you're right Odette. Especially if google maps says so. I travel these roads weekly (precovid) and I'm aware that Im not wrong

No mocking going, just pointing out that just because it's "Perthshire" doesn't mean it's on the doorstep of Auchterarder.

But you knock yourself out with the thread monitoring if it makes you feel all smug and clever.
