Elgin

My other half has been offered a job in Elgin. Our first choice was Inverness but it didn’t quite work out. Looks like we’ll been moving at the end of August which has sent me into panic to be honest. We have four boys so need to look at schools and nursery for the youngest one. They all play instruments and do swimming.
We’ve only stopped briefly in Elgin before, seen the cathedral, been to Findhorn and love the idea of being close to both the sea and mountains.
But we need to find a house first. Ideally we would like to be within 5 miles from Elgin.
Any tips on which areas to look at or any advice really would be great.

Just back from a wee holiday in that area.
Elgin seemed tired to me.
Forres is better.
Would Nairn be too far? Train to Elgin? It's closer to Inverness and has a pool - plus lots of lovely beach.

PalsofKretek · 21/06/2021 18:36

Nairn would be too far I think. Forres is a maybe, just not sure about schools. We’re also looking at Lossiemouth but again I’m not convinced so any advice would be great.

Start with the Secondary Schools. It's been A LONG time since I was there but you have Elgin Academy (DID have an academic reputation, music), Elgin High (DID have a reputation for great sport, DoE that kind of thing).

I have a feeling they MIGHT have merged now - someone will know better - but your kids obviously easily need to get to school somehow.

I HEARD Milnes had / was getting a better reputation. Lots if kids bussed there from Elgin. If you can afford it, Gordonston is local.

West End PS, Bishopmill PS WERE the posher ends of town. Also around St Sylvesters PC. No idea if that is still the case.

Where are you now? What facilities are you used to?

As pp, the town centre is VERY sad. Lossiemouth is lovely but you will be a taxi into Elgin for sports, swimming etc. If you want to shop in M&S and nip to Pret for lunch - forgot it. It still has a cinema I believe and I think the ice rink is still open.

Talking to friends who are still there, the nightlife is crap. Some good restaurants though.

The 8 Acres Hotel used to have a pool you can join as a private member. Think David Lloyds and then lower your expectations massively.

Moray, in general, I've found a lot friendlier than Aberdeenshire towns, for example to outsiders.

Look around Dr Greys, Bishopmill, near the station but not the "New Elgin" side of the tracks. There has been a HEAP of new house building so can't comment on those areas. Check local flood maps. Areas around the Cathedral are prone to flooding.

Winters are not too bad - unless you live rurally. Fochabers has a bypass for a reason - there's nothing there.

Aim for central Elgin so at least your kids can get places under their own stream.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 21/06/2021 19:25

I am assuming that you drive which makes live easier. How old are your children? Do any of your children have extra needs such as asd because some schools cater better than others when it comes to needs like this.

What things are you interested in? Do you prefer rural, beach or town living?

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 21/06/2021 19:29

@JamMakingWannaBe what is wrong with the New Elgin side?

You are wrong about the secondary schools, there are still two.

PalsofKretek · 21/06/2021 19:44

Lots of great info. Thank you!
We’re living very remote right now, think one of the island groups, so everything will feel like a big city. No Pret or M&S would not worry me, all we have here is Tesco and Lidl.
Great advice about schools. Boys play brass instruments and fiddle. We have one secondary age boy with ads. Where should we look @BedknobsNoBroomsticks
A cheeky child has mentioned Gordonston - don’t think we can stretch to that 😂
And why not New Elgin? All the houses coming up for sale seem to be there.
We do own a boat and Lossiemouth would be handy for marina.
Anything outdoorsy will keep us busy really.

New Elgin is ok but it has the biggest primary school in Moray which some people may not like. A friend has just moved there and really likes it as it's walkable to Asda and the retail park.

Most of the funding seems to go to things based in Elgin and there's always been a bit of a division in Moray with Elgin, Forres and Fochabers thought of as being superior. Lossie is ok with a large RAF population and normally lots of tourists in the summer.

boydy99 · 21/06/2021 20:53

Elgin has a fab swimming club, not sure where they train now but used to be Moray Leisure, Lossie and Gordonstoun. Forres also has a good swimming club. not sure about Elgin schools, Forres Academy was reasonable when I was there (pre 2012) but I believe its a bit more rough now and there was talk of reducing the week to a 4 day week a couple of years ago.

There's loads of new development out New Elgin way, seems like a nice area. The Pluscarden, Milton Duff, Mosstowie area is lovely if you're looking for something more rural. Also check the route of the new A96 too, I think but not 100% sure that its going south of Elgin so definitely worth checking if proximity to a dual carriageway would be a negative or a positive for you.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 21/06/2021 21:09

Elgin Academy was awarded for their additional needs support a few years ago so that may be the best option.

As for New Elgin being one to avoid because of new housing developments, well haven't you heard of Findrassie. That is on the other side of town.

If it was me moving I would rent somewhere first and spend a couple of months exploring the area. Get a feel for where you feel would suit your family.

Some areas of Elgin have a bad reputation but that depends who you talk to. Everyone has different experiences.

Also Elgin is very overcrowded so you may not have a choice in schools, you may just have to go where there is space.

PalsofKretek · 21/06/2021 22:18

We would consider renting but we would be looking at 3+ bedroom house/flat. It's like hen's teeth these days it seems. But it's an option if we're unable to buy a house.
I love the idea of Pluscarden but it might be a bit too far. Trees is something we're missing very much! The other Ares to the south look lovely too.
Really reassuring to hear about Elgin Academy. It's a major worry as we're not sure how he'll cope with a such a big change.
We're looking at spending a few days in the area in the summer holidays, so it's good to know what to look out for.

It’s such a great area to grow up in - I lived in a village nearby until I was 17 and attended one of the secondaries mentioned - not Elgin Academy or High, but I know multiple people, particularly from the latter, who have gone on to be hugely successful - lawyers/doctors/vets/scientists/ business owners/dentists/engineers etc etc (I apologise for my STEM slant, showing my own interests!)

There’s also masses to do, amazing countryside, beaches, outdoor sports, swimming club, football clubs, rugby club, excellent local library, leisure centre is one of the best in a large town/small city I’ve come across.

Moray in general is a bit of a microcosm, and not really comparable to anything around it as the demographic is fairly unique thanks to the military bases and also there are a number of large businesses which have offshoots there, but also unlike say Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow etc, most children still go to the local secondary school rather than being sent privately, so the schools themselves have a wide social intake which I personally think works out better for everyone.

Elginite · 03/07/2021 20:18

What’s your budget? I love a rightmove trawl….

PalsofKretek · 03/07/2021 21:01

Hehe @ Elginite
We’ve lived well over a decade in a very homogenous society and a bit more diversity would be welcome news. We also like the area as it’s close to the airport as well as mountains (skiing) and the sea.
Budget up to 500k, ideally a bit lower but we need to find 4-5 bedroom house for that. I’m trawling rightmove daily but would be interesting to hear what you would choose with budget🙂

This one has 5 beds and a lovely garden www.primelocation.com/for-sale/details/59001168/?search_identifier=43472fd1584f020a43b06d286cb576c5

tealappeal · 03/07/2021 21:08

And this one has 5 beds and is right in the centre of Elgin www.primelocation.com/for-sale/details/58901968/?search_identifier=43472fd1584f020a43b06d286cb576c5

PalsofKretek · 03/07/2021 21:20

That first house is my absolute favourite but hubby not convinced about the area.
Second one I like as well and it’s in Elgin but only one bathroom would cause many arguments or at the very best lengthy queues every morning 😂

tealappeal · 03/07/2021 21:23

I think you need to do a bit more convincing on house number one! Pity you can't stretch to this one! www.galbraithgroup.com/property/elg210025-norham-22-reidhaven-street-elgin-iv30-1qh

PalsofKretek · 03/07/2021 21:28

I’m working hard on convincing the other half and a lottery win!

I’m working hard on convincing the other half and a lottery win!
Grin Fingers crossed then!
RaraRachael · 03/07/2021 21:33

I had a little chuckle when I saw the house in Reidhaven Street. Many, many moons ago my friend fancied a boy from Elgin. Via lots of old fashioned detective work (looking up the phone directory etc) we discovered he lived in that very house Grin

Elginite · 04/07/2021 13:11

Ard Darroch, Mosstowie, By Elgin
www.rightmove.co.uk/property/108602990

Was coming to suggest the same two as @tealappeal, and also this one. Location is absolutely beautiful, very ‘naice’ bit of the countryside too.

Elginite · 04/07/2021 17:36

Incidentally - Fochabers, Garmouth, Kingston, Hopeman, Findhorn would all be places I would look before Lossiemouth.

MargaretHooper · 08/07/2021 18:19

Also love a house trawl!
Earlston Villa does have 2 bathrooms though?

What about this one ?
Burghead is 10- 15 mins from Elgin. Fab views!

Finally, we've booked some viewings for next week. Thank you for recommendations.
For some strange reason I'm really drawn to this one...
