Rhiannon Spear hates the UK

MsBarbaryBriefly · 25/05/2021 01:06

Rhiannon Spear, who represents the Greater Pollok ward in Glasgow, was accused of using “abhorrent language” in a tweet about the Eurovision results in which she said: “It’s OK Europe we hate the United Kingdom too. Love, Scotland.”

Reported in The Times. I suppose it's nice to know she's at least being honest.

Why don't these people understand that their role as an elected official paid for by the public purse means they have some responsibility to behave in a manner appropriate to that role in public? It's not rocket science is it?

WouldBeGood · 25/05/2021 21:12

I think she’s extremely stupid

ElephantOfRisk · 25/05/2021 21:32

I wonder how much she gets paid?

Viviennemary · 25/05/2021 21:36

Is she twelve. What an idiot.

WouldBeGood · 25/05/2021 21:45

She might be. She has a unicorn emoji on her Twitter profile, and has locked her account 🤣

Torvean · 25/05/2021 22:23

I was born in Scitland and have always lived here. My mother was Scottish, my dad's is English.

I've had ppl tell me I can't support womans right as I don't vote SNP and I voted against independence. And also I've been told that I can't be "fully Scottish " for not voting SNP .

Torvean · 25/05/2021 22:24

Maria53 · 25/05/2021 22:26

For goodness sake. I know a lot of SNP members that can't stand the woman - she isn't representative of all other members.

Of all the SNP members I personally know I've heard 1 using anti English language. And I've known a lot of them.

Iwouldratherbesailing · 25/05/2021 23:14

If SNP don’t agree with these comments they need to start calling them out. They don’t though. They just stay silent.

What a waste of police time FFS!!

Would be hilarious though if someone from the SNP was the first to be charged under the HCB!!😂😂

ElephantOfRisk · 26/05/2021 00:00

I agree it's a waste of police time and it won't be the last.

Also agree that would be hilarious (and tragic at the same time) such a poor reflection on society that it comes to this.

Given the recent cases of women in Scotland being reported for hate speech, Spear deserves this.

It depends what you mean by 'the SNP' though @Iwouldratherbesailing. Do you mean its leadership or members? Nicola is her number one fan it seems so no hope there.

The SNP is now quite split about various issues, hence the birth of Alba. Rhiannon was voted out as women's convenor 5 months ago - now she has been voted back in again after they re-ran the nec election. Does anyone know why they ran it again?

I don't but I know a good few women in the party that are livid about her return.

Spearman lost to Caroline Macallister who subsequently defected to Alba.

Googling Rhiannon I see she had been taking lessons from the Mhairi Black charm school. Wings has screenshots of Spear endorsing Black calling women who disagree with them "Jeremy Hunts"

Regardless of what they were disagreeing about it's really not acceptable for elected representatives to refer to women in that way. Nor , regardless of what they might think of Jeremy Hunt, to use playground bully tactics of mocking his name.

Slightly off topic but after the Mhairi Black "Jeremy Hunt" incident I emailed Mr Murrel to ask if he thought it appropriate for an SNP MP to refer to her constituents as cunts and to show such disrespect to a fellow MP. Answer came there none.

There is such an ugly arrogance behind this type of behaviour. It's really unpleasant and undignified and I think they forget that they are meant to be serving their constituents, not just themselves, their cronies and then way further down, the people who voted for them. Anyone who didn't vote for them isn't just bottom of the pile, they are not being represented at all as far as I can see.

RaspberryCoulis · 26/05/2021 07:47

Our previous SNP MP, John Nicholson, blocked all constituents on Twitter and other social media if they criticised him. Loads of us were blocked over querying why at the 2015 election he was using a promotional still from his BBC career at least 20 years earlier - honestly it was so different that if you saw the advertising, and saw the man in the flesh you wouldn't know it was the same bloke.

Block. block. block. Exist in an echo chamber.

MPs, councillors and MSPs are there to represent ALL of their constituents. Not just hte ones who voted for them. A lot of them don't seem to get that.

Iwouldratherbesailing · 26/05/2021 08:47

What annoys me is if they want independence and think it’s a good idea, why don’t they try winning people over with good arguments instead of petty playground insults and divisions?

Yes there is that. They would need some good arguments first rather than "just because". I understand the emotion behind the "just because" but don't believe that emotion is enough.

Also the position since 2014 hasn't really changed in terms of the polls yet we are being sold that Brexit makes a material difference and therefore requires another referendum. Seems like people don't really care that much after all...

Torvean · 27/05/2021 02:29

I know it's the Daily Record. But here's another SNP being called up over something on SM and the SNP brushing it off.

Boomisshiss · 27/05/2021 09:24

Can’t believe they don’t even address this just sweep it under the carpet. Her apology wasn’t even sincere . Let’s not forget before she was made to apologise she was arguing with people in the comments who pointed out to her how offensive it was. Typical SNP bunch of hypocrites

SengaMac · 27/05/2021 10:25

Rhiannon Spear is definitely in an echo chamber as she blocks everyone who doesn't agree with her.

SengaMac · 27/05/2021 10:42

Torvean that was in response to Neil Gaiman travelling from New Zealand to Skye at the height of the first wave.
There was reasonable, imo, outrage about it.

John Nicolson's picture is what you see whan you look up "misogynist", "sexist", or "homophobe" in the dictionary. Absolutely classic case of woman-hating. Absolutely insane that the SNP has not bothered themselves to censure him - and I say this as an independence supporter. Absolute piece of shite.
